Your ECM should be originally a GM 1227165 and if yours is original it would display that information on the label on the ECM. There's different PROMS but an M6 with either of the rear axle ratios uses the same PROM. Pretty straight forward replacement.

GM 16198259 would be the number I would be looking for if I were trying to get one from a dealers shelf. It's not the most recent but that number I believe would have still have met OE quality standards.

I recently changed my ECM on my 1990 and as said above; give the supplier the p/n on the old ECM to order. According to my GM dealership its gone thru a few p/n changes but its readily available. NOTE.... keep the cover ....clips and nuts from your old one when you return the core as they are all remanufactured and those items are not supplied. Had the misfortune of the replacement going bad after a few days but used the warranty to get another one and all is well. The sticker says remanufactured in the USA so just be aware.

Sounds like your problem is other than ECM

Have you checked for stored codes in ECM ?

I see you have an 89, know for problem injectors. You may want to ohm test them cold then hot. Sounds like you may be having injector problems when they are hot.

I would be doing a lot more investigating and testing before throwing $$$ at a new ECM and hoping that it will cure all your problems

9 times out of 10 device failure that reports incorrect information to the ecm is the cause. A bad injector that goes short to ground can overheat the injector driver, or many other issues. As the others have said I would start with injectors.

Should you remove the ecm, make sure to pull the cover, and push on the 2 tabs and pop out the memcal and save it. I've known guys that turn the ecm in for a core forgetting to remove the memcal and then have to buy that too.

I doubt your ECM is bad. They are very robust and can take a lot of abuse.

If for some reason you decide to replace it or send it out for rebuilding, make REALLY REALLY sure you take the MEMCAL out before sending it off. It has the calibration that is customized to your car. That includes the year of your car, the transmission type and rear end ratio. You take off a cover with two 1/4" screws to access it. It looks like this:

thanks for the info guys, I'm a pretty good mechanic except its been a long time since I've turned any wrenches. and the electronics are my weak area..
I did a scan on the car and got a code 41 then did a DTC (whatever that means) and got codes 41,42,43, 46,51,54 then did a live data and got codes 24 & 25. Oh so where to start ? I wish there was a place close by here in TN that could give a 1 day class and get me up to speed on this stuff. anyway Thanks for any help.. I really dont have any funds to just throw at the issue and play guess work.. any advise is greatly appreciated

Last time someone came to the board and pulled as many codes as you claim it was the ecm, or memcal. Honestly, I can't remember which. Yours will look similar to the picture of the 1227730 6 cylinder ecm and memcal Cliff posted, but not exact. Your may be a 1227165, but I thought by 89 they had updated to the 16198259 which is an update version. Good luck on your diagnosis.

Thanks for the help. Is the ECM hard to remove .? Location? Thanks I'm going to get with a contact from another vette site and see what he has as far as ECM's. but at the same time I think I'll change the injectors , the engine only has 40k miles but the injectors are old and not make for ethanol, it might be wise to change them .? thanks for all the help

You take off the passenger side kick panel (several 7mm screws). The ECM then slips out after removing two 10mm bolts. It's in a plastic bracket attached to the firewall. It's easy to spot by the tan/yellow color. It's kinda far up under there and you will have to push some wiring harnesses aside to get to it.

It's the metal box on the floor in this pic:

Thanks Cliff ..... I've built a few automatic trans. and would rather pull apart a 700R then to have the dash taken apart like in the picture . I'd never get it all back together correctly or without squeaks and rattles.. I have a corvette brother helping me out with a computer . Thanks again, and Bless you my child as you put the dash back together
