Put finger over # 1 spark plug hole and turn the engine over.
When your finger is blown off the hole, you are TDC on the compression stroke where you want to be.
You may have to wind the engine back a little to line the timing marks up

if the distributor doesnt drop right in put it where its pointing to #1 on the cap. See if someone can bump the motor over while you put just a slight bit of downward pressure (not always necessary) on the distributor . The oil pump shaft will "catch up" with teh slot on the distributor and drop in or usualy does.
Then rotate over again to double check your work before putting the cap on

Mines stubborn and the oil pump drive leans off to one side "dropping it in is impossible"

If this is true, your cam timing is wrong or the harmonic damper is damaged. Turn the crankshaft with a socket wrench on the crankshaft center bolt. You should see the exhaust valve move first, then the the intake valve. That's the #6 firing position. Continue turning the crank one revolution to the next timing mark. At that position, you should be able to twist the pushrods for both the intake and the exhaust rocker arms easily with you fingers. That's the #1 firing position.

After the intake valve closes bring it to tdc. No finger required. The cylinder fires after it is filled not after it exhausts.
