Got in, It cranked up, backed up about 2 feet then died. I tried to start it back up (thinking maybe I let out of the clutch to quick?) and it hit once and hasn't done anything since.
I have checked the spark and it shows good through my tester, and I sprayed a touch of starting fluid to it and it tried to run
I have between 45-50 psi of fuel pressure at the rail.
I put a new opti on it a few months back but I was told that it could still cause this problem? Opinions? Idea's?
Thanks

If you can spray fuel into the intake and it will run then you have a Fuel delivery problem. If you have fuel pressure at the rail then it could be something with your fuel injection computer, fuel pump, or even regulator.
I had a problem where i had fuel pressure at the rail when the key was one but i got a crank no start.
Sprayed fuel into the intake she started right up for 5 seconds.

PLEASE clarify. When you turn the key with the clutch pushed down...does the engine spin over????

You need to check more than just one wire for spark. I do several.
I have between 45-50 psi of fuel pressure at the rail.
With this pressure (45-50psi) ...which is fine...does it hold when you turn the key off for some time????

Also....what type of opti-spark did you install GM or another make????
Thanks

I hope you can confirm that the fuel in the car is of good quality. Depending on the type of fuel pressure gauge you are using...mine has a side port on it so I can allow fuel to come out of the side of the gauge and I can see if the fuel is good or not by allowing it to fill in a clear plastic container. If the car is parked outside and the drain hole in the rubber boot around your fuel neck...I have had numerous cars that have had major amounts of water in the fuel tank.
Yes the engine still spins over, I checked 3 different wires, all were good on spark. I did not check if it would hold pressure after the key was off so I will do that again. I installed a Richporter brand opti spark.
I Havent checked to see about water in the fuel. I typically put fuel in car every few day from the same gas station. I also get fuel for my other cars at the same location and have had no issues. Doesn't mean there wasn't some build-up of water already there however
When you put your fuel pressure gauge on the port at the rail for fuel pressure testing...and you turn you key to "ON"....and you see that you have fuel pressure. Turn the key "OFF" and see what happens. If after a minute or so you still have high fuel pressure...GREAT!!!
Then...turn the key to "ON" again...wait a few seconds (5-10) and then try to crank the engine...while doing this...WATCH your fuel pressure gauge and see if it drops and does NOT get back up to the pressure that was showing when you turned your key "ON". If the fuel pressure drops like a rock and does not pressurize the system. You more than likely have a problem in the oil pressure safety switch mounted at the back of your engine. It should be a three wire switch mounted in the same metal hex tube assembly at the back of the engine (drivers side) (hard to get to) that also has your oil pressure switch for your oil gauge...if my memory serves me correctly.
From what I already knew and WAS confirmed by Gordon Killebrew...this oil pressure safety switch is used to protect your engine. If it can not detect oil pressure above 4 psi...this switch will remain "closed" and not allow the fuel pump to energize when you are trying to get the engine to run. He said that it should take approximately 2 seconds for the oil pressure to reach teh required level to close this safety switch and make the pump pump run.
If you are asking why you are getting fuel pressure when you just turn the key to "ON". This is the "priming" or "pressurizing" portion of the fuel system that GM designed...which does not require the engine turning over to get he pump to operate. This "priming" or "pressurizing" sequence only lasts for 2 seconds EVERY time the key is turned to "ON"...and then the fuel pump will shut off ...waiting on the oil pressure safety switch to get the pump running again once it detects enough oil pressure to closed this switch as designed. If this connector fell off your switch...this can be your problem.
Did you check for codes? I replaced my opti last year. It ran great for about 3000 miles and the opti failed. Was an OEM opti. I did get a new one under warranty.

My car wont scan unless its running. I don't know why but its done that since I have had it.
