Hey Guys, The geometry and angularity of the 450 finally caught up with it. I broke a connecting rod. They were 7 years old and a 4.125 stroke turning almost 7000 rpm with a 5.85 rod and the nitrous full tilt finally did it in. I guess 7 years out of the Crower rods isn't too bad. The block is still good, and I could put it back together, but I decided to go a different direction. Actually if somebody wanted the 450 and it was a 5500-6000 rpm hyd roller engine, I think it would last a while.
So the new build consists of a Dart Iron Eagle tall deck block. The deck height is 9.325. It's .300 taller deck, the cam is raised .391 and the pan rails are spread .800. It also has billet 4 bolt main caps on all 5 main caps instead of just the center 3. I am going with a 4.165 bore and 4.250 stroke (464ci). That leaves me two rebuilds of 4.185 and 4.200. A 4.200 bore with a 4.25 stroke makes a 472ci. I also went with a Lunati Pro series knife edged crank. There aren't alot of options a on 4.25 stroke SBC cranks. I went with Crower billet rods and some custom JE pistons. The new rods are now 6.200 which will have much better geometry and won't wear pistons the way the 450 did. I am still going to spray a 200 shot at it and used Hellfire rings. I changed up the cam a bit, I now have a Crane 256/264 .714/.674 on a 112 LSA solid roller. I am reusing my AFR 245's as they were not damaged and Miniram (Mamoram). Compression is 12.25. The tall deck throws a few curves though, I need intake to head spacers, the block doesn't have a oil filter mount, so you need a remote oil filter. And it throws off your headers and bracketry for the alternator and accessories. You also need a special timing chain set and oil pan. My machine shop was also able to internal balance it, which is good.
Here are some pic's of the build.
I degreed the cam and it was .5 degree advanced, about perfect, so I left it there.
Hey Jim
How you been? Don't get to post on here very often anymore but this thread definitely caught my eye. All I can say is D@MN!!!
Very impressive (not that anything you do isn't).
Are you still going to run the Mamoram, if so how do you make it work with the tall deck block?
Wow Jim. Great pics. I would love to say what part is my favorite but I can't. I love them all. The Dart Iron Eagle tall deck, The Crower Crank with knife edging (that is the part I am truly jealous of) By far the nicest crank I have had the pleasure to see and touch, the 6.20 inch Crower Maxi Lite rods that look way to big to put in a small block, the Crower shaft system to put the final touch on the AFR 245'S to allow them to breath to their full potential. I can't wait to go for a ride. I'm praying for sunshine in November. Seriously.
Wow Jim, , I see you've been staying busy...Can't wait to see this bad boy in action..What kind of HP are you looking at without the nos??..WW
Scott Shafiroff Racing engines has engine very similar to mine. Only theirs has 10.75 compression, I am 12.25. Theirs also has AFR 235's and I have AFR 245's. I think our cams are similar.Theirs makes 675hp @6200 and 640tq, so I would think I should be in the ballpark. Mine is only 464 instead of 472 though.

Hi Dane, Dart makes intake spacers so I can reuse my Mamoram. I had to have those machined, they were too tall to fit the head. they did come with a 1206 port though, so that made it a close fit.

Nice, very interesting! How do you like the 245 heads? I am very interested in them for my latest build.
I really like the 245's, especially on a big inch, high hp engine. Or even a bit smaller with forced induction, they would work well. The only thing is you have to use a shaft system with them. No getting around it.
That is awesome ! Im also running a crower 6.2 maxi lite rod. Took me a while to choose but Im happy I went with them. Funny, my cam is similar, compression a bit higher but Im 100ci less
Really interested In how this setup fits, what oil pan setup you go with and what you do for headers and accessories. Pretty much all the reasons I shied away from building my new motor this way and stuck with the LTX block :/
