Hi Guys,
I just noticed a problem with my car on the way in to work today...if I am at low rpm, and most noticably in 5th or 6th gear, and hit the throttle to half or more, I am getting what feels like a miss in the engine. It seems to go away by about 2k rpm. It did this once before a few weeks ago, and then seemed ok, and I couldn't re-create it, but now it is doing it all the time.
What do you think it could be? What should I look at first?
I have had that happen with low fuel, if I accelerate fast the engine cuts out for a second. Right now I have an almost full tank of gas, and the stumble is happening even at freeway speeds, trying to accelerate in 5th or 6th gear while under 2k rpms.
I had these symptoms a few weeks ago. It would stumble bad under load at low RPM. I noticed it most If I shifted to second going real slow, it would stumble real bad. At that slow speed, sometimes the engine would even die. Trying to take off in second gear was impossible, would just die. Like yours, in 6th gear, if I pushed the gas down at less than about 1500 RPM, it stumbled bad. Once the RPM got up above 1500, ran like a bat outta hell.
In my case it was a weak opti-spark. probably the last thing you wanted to hear. I knew mine was weak because I had gotten it wet last fall.
I replaced the opti a few weeks ago and all is well. Good luck.
That is the last thing I wanted to hear, but it's what I was afraid of!! How do you test the opti? Where is the best place to pick up a new one? How much?
What else could be wrong besides the opti that would cause stumble on acceleration at low rpm's? I want to fix any cheap stuff before I spend the money on an opti. It seems like most people with a bad opti have problems at higher rpm? is that right or does it usually affect low rpm under load first? my car only has 41,000 miles on it, should the opti already be going bad?
Yea, I have read that other people opti symptoms happen at high RPM too. Maybe it's not your opti, I'm just saying that's the way MY opti acted when it was going out. Has yours ever gotten wet that you know of?
I hope it's something else easier for you.
well, I guess I can hope it's not the opti...but right now i am afraid it is, I am just trying to exhaust other possibilities before I change mine out. How long did you have the stumbling problem? Now that I think about it, this has been happeningfor a while, if I would make a turn in 3rd gear and then try to get on it right away, and once before on the freeway in 6th...
I have only been caught in the rain twice, although once was a big thunderstorm/downpour so i hope that didn't do anything. I don't know what the previous owners did, but I think it wasn't in the rain much based on how clean everything was when I got it...
oh well, I guess this is one of the joys of owning a vette ;)
