Is there a way of testing a fuel pump at the connection of the fuel tank? I think there are only three wires going in. I assume one is ground , and one is for the sending unit, but which one is which? I was hoping to be able to put 12v to the wire and know if the pump was junk.
Disconnect the harness connector and using a test light...when you turn on the key...the power going to the pump will be on for about 2 seconds and then go off as designed.
Black is ground...I believe tan is sending unit and the other should be power. I do not have my manual here at home ...but if my memory serves me correctly...that is how it is.
Now would be a good time buying a factory service manual. No Chilton, Haynes or Mitchell books...only the manual from Helm.
From my 94 FSM and other documentation in have;
Gray is pump power, purple is sending unit.
But in a post I wrote long ago, I indicated the sending was a green wire. Thinks that's because it really was green and I did not know why it was different from the FSM.
Open the fuel filler door and remove the rubber boot. The fuel line at the top of the tank (toward the front of the car) is the fuel supply line to the engine, disconnect it and attach a short length of fuel line running to the ground and into a bottle. Turn on the key and go back behind the car to see if any fuel ran into the bottle, if not then your fuel pump is shot or a fuse is out, but probably the pump is bad.
