Pulled motor to install cam, lifters, rocker arms, clutch, oil pump & pan, and some long tubes along with some maintenence items. Keeping stock bottom end. Purchased a Melling stock replacement timing set but worried now about it coming apart. Cam is going to take me into the 6200 to 6500 range. Will a stock unit handle that? How do I go to an LT4 set without changing my MSD Optispark, cam, and water pump?
you need a 95/96 lt1 timing cover a gen2 opti and a lt1 roller set. if you change to an Electric Water Pump you can use just about any SBC dual roller setup.
To upgrade the timing set on a 92-94 Corvette you have to change over to the 95-96 cover & pin drive opti. Then you can use the single roller LT4 extreme duty which is still not that great or the best option is a 87-91 SBC double roller (requires elect water pump).
Otherwise the Melling replacement timing set you have is the best thing going... which isn't saying much for a 6000rpm engine with a big cam and heavier valve springs.
