This is all complicated by the fact Im not comfortable trying to get the car raised up yet.

I do have a cheapo floor jack and some stands. I suppose I could drive up on something to get room to get the jack under the car,and I saw where to put the jack on youtube. But how to get the jack stands in with the jack there Im not sure of.

So,I found on OReiilys site some dimensions of the od and id of the oil filter gaskets and the Bosch Premium looked like it had a significantly larger gasket size that the Wix one I bought. At the store it didnt check out to be the size they stated for id and od, but it did look like it was .1 to .15 larger od.

I had it put in and they had me come look under the car with it running and no leak, so far.

It was back to making drips on the ground where I pull in and out of my drive again, Im thinking the guy who looked at it and took that picture didnt put it on real tight.

Wether its not driping right now because its on tighter again, or because the o ring on thi sfilter is a little wider or a more firm material (felt like it to me) Im not certain.

No drips on the ground no smoke coming in the vents for now at least.

The gasket on the filter they took off shows no sign of scarring whatsoever.

It isnt right now the drops on the ground have ceased. So far. Unless its an intermittent leak from somewhere else, but I did see it dripping from the filter area and not from above it and thats why the filter was taken off to discover this defect or damage in the first place.

Yes there is evidence of other/another leak,it could have been from when the valve covers were leaking previously but no sign of that since they were tightened slightly.

Many different leaks from other places can end up dripping from the bottom of the filter. When the back of my intake was leaking it would end up as a drop coming off the bottom of the oil filter. I fixed the intake leak and no more drips from the bottom of the oil filter.

As other have pointed out, your block is wet above the oil filter............leaks don't travel upward so something above is leaking.

Or was ie the vc? Every time the drips have occured its been resolved or its intermittent. At the time the dripping was observed while under the car nothing else was found, by two different observers. But maybe I can check the intake if someone tells me whats inolved.

You indicate that you have possibly stopped the leak from the area of the filter. If I were you I would wipe off and clean any oily areas around the filter and continue monitoring it for drips.

At the same time I would think about changing the valve cover gaskets if they are more than a few years old. You can also inspect at the front and rear of the intake manifold where it meets the block to see if there are any oily spots or leaking. Check the crank seal at the front of the timing cover - it's a traditional leak point and the oil has a tendency to move all around under the car as it is blown back while moving. If those areas are leaking replace the gaskets and seals. Then clean and inspect around the oil pan gasket. I don't know where the oil pressure switch is located on the 1984 but that can also be a source of an oil leak.

Good luck - taking your time and patiently working from the top down will make sure any leaks are fixed.
