Right now I have a D44 rear end with GM gears. Everything rear of the trans it GM stock. Swapped out the D36 rear end, center support and shaft. So, if I were to consider a project to strengthen the rear end, what would support minimum of 500HP? I currently book 420 at the rear wheels. Just wondering what would break and how much to save up for.
But what is the weak part? Housing? Differential? Half shafts? Or is it the drive shaft from Trans to differential?
......... All of the above ! ..... be pro-active when anything at all gets your attention ... and be vigilant about putting an eye on everything under the rear , including all suspension pieces as well ... maintenance .......
I had a D44 housing put in and replaced the gears with 3.54 which the builder said would match the cam and intakes. Nothing has gotten my attention yet and maintenance has been done regularly. Just switched last year to poly bushings. I'm a little nervous about the clutch pack and might just have it done for the hell of it but I'd rather not throw good money after bad if I am going to replace the differential with something better.
At your power level and what you intend to increase it to the weakest link is the UJoint and the Posi.
I encourage you to check out the break away on your Posi and get familiar with the process. Any serious amount of racing with that kind of power will wear it out and as stated by WVZR-1 maintenance is the biggest problem.
