Just put in the new Petris opti and the car ran great, went out 2 hours later to drive her for the second time since the change, started her up and it runs like crap its rough and surging, this crap is real fun. What the hell is going on I connected everything back up.
Yeah, there is a permanent fix. 24x EFI Connection systems or OEM opti-spark.
IDK... Doesn't get rid of the Opti wheel/sensor...the most problematic part of the Opti.
OEM might be a fix. Not saying "this is it", b/c I don't think that it is....but my NAPA unit has been in my car for over three years now. No issues so far.

It's good to hear that some of you got one that works more than 10 minutes. Well onward I go with the game. Bty don't buy a chandlers, it only lasted about 2000 miles but I guess that beats 6 miles. I just dont understand how it ran so good and after shutting it down and a restart 2 hours later it just went upside down.
What is it with these aftermarket Opti's? Can none of these manufacturers build a quality unit? Is the failure rate of the Opti's one of the reasons why you don't see a lot of '90's B-body and F-bodies around any more?
Did something come loose? Seems like that would be the case. They should replace it.
We just bought the same thing for Lynda's 94. Goes in the 22nd for some testing just in case its not the OPTI. If it is then the Petris is sitting on my desk.

Im convinced the opti is not a bad design, just in a bad place.
Oem optis are fine - as long as they have a custom vent harness added on the 92 thru 94.
Howver its my understanding there are no gen 1 nos oem ac delco optis left.
Gen 2 i believe might still exist as delphi and be available but im not 100% sure. Need to confirm that the latest delphi units atill have the mitsubishi emblem on the optical sensor
Lastly ... Our cars run hot. Heat is bad for electronics.
Figure out a way to make the car run cooler and opti will live longer. For example i have a reprogrammed fans and 160 tstat. I never see over 180f vs stock where 220f was normal
The issue is on the aftermarket optispark is poor quality of the electronics (optical sensor) and sometimes poor assembly (warped reluctor disks)

I doubt temperature is part of the problem. My brother has a 94 Trans AM with a 95 LT1 that has about 170k+ on the original opti with just a cap, and rotor replacement. Factory thermostat temperature.
Last time I checked the PCM was sending the opti 1vdc, and when it ran the car had the symptoms of a bad opti. After some looking, and a new power source it has ran fine with no problems.
Another interesting fact I doubt people here will believe is that you can use a 4-pin HEI ICM in place of the LT1 ICM.

Didnt the f bodys get the gen 2 (with vent harnss) opti before the vettes?

I suspect that is a gen 2 opti on that f body
The engine is a 95, so yes it is vented. He got a 95 Firebird Formula with an LT1/T56 that had been rear ended for about 1K. Then a 94 Trans AM, that someone bought for the drivetrain for $500.

Not if you want to keep the factory fuel injection. What I meant was you can wire it in place of the factory ICM, and it will work.
