OK, I usually am on the C3 side, but decided to seek some info here. I am working on building a 1986 L98 TPI motor that will go into my '78 C3. I pretty much have figured out what direction I am going with my engine harness set up, which brings me to the ECU and prom. As I understand things, the ecu would be a 7165 w/ MAF sensor set up. DO I buy one set up for an auto trans ( I am putting a 200R4 behind this motor). Most of what I found need a core deposit, and since I have no core do I just go to ebay? Then the prom. This will be an almost stock 350. Little higher comp ration. So I am thinking to get a stock used prom for the '86 then have a local shop burn my specific info ( the 200R4 for example) into it. Thanks in advance for your feedback and steering me in the right direction. This old dog is having trouble learning new tricks.

I recommend buying an EBL Flash from DynamicEFI. You can set it up yourself or have your tuner do it. All you need is a laptop.

EBL for sure. Will no longer need MAF with EBL. EBL may support MAF but most of us tuners would go SD. The .bin needs to be specific for tranny as in manual or auto.

I would use a aftermarket harness from painless wiring or build your own. I personally would use painless. I just converted my TBI to port fuel. EBL fired it up and ran perfectly on stock LT4 .bin(manual)

The only real connection the ECM has with the trans is the TCC lockup output.

I have a 165'ECM and harness I would sell to you for your project if you're not going to go the EBL route

I installed a TPI motor in my El Camino with a 7165 computer. I used a prom for a 1988 Camaro IROC. It doesn't have the VATS. I don't know if new ones are available but you might get lucky on EBAY. Don't use one for a 305.

Art, I actually found a 165 and a prom from an '86 automatic corvette for about $150 on ebay. I will need to get the egr, charcoal cannister and some other things removed, including the vats. I finally decided to go that direction after looking at the options I had. I wanted to keep it as simple as I could and by goiing with as much GM stuff as I can, it will make life easier in the long run. Or so I think! Thanks.
