Default 3.33 gears with automatic

anyone running these gears with a 700r4? How do you like them? I will be getting my Dana 44 conversion with these gears done next week and was curious. Thanks.

It will be a whole lot peppier than the 2.59. Not so much, if you have a 3.07 I have a 3.73 but moving where highway speeds run 75-90 mph IMO I have a little too much gear.

It has the 2.59 gears now. With 3.33 I hope to get good acceleration with decent highway.

I don't want to state the obvious, but "too much gear" really depends on if your engine is built, torque converter, etc, and use. Is your C4 stock? I just got a DANA 44 for my 1994, not installed yet.
Cam is 227/234/.575/110LSA, 3000 stall converter and I'm lookig at 3.73 vs 4.11. I think I'll go with 4.11. Little to no highway driving. best of luck. let us know what you decide.

I have the 2.59 and found a 3.31 set that goes in a Dana 36 so I'm having one set up now.

I bought a used Dana 36 and having it re-built A~Z so my swap will be seamless.

Stay tuned...

3.33 is as low as I'd ever go with an A4, but I drive a lot of highway.

You will probably be very happy with it. I'd add a higher stall TC to that at some point.

Does anyone have real 1/4 mile times with 4.11 and other ratios like 3.73 or 3.33? I'm thinking of going from 3.07 to 4.11 on a LE2 build on a 4L60E with a 3000TC
(just picked up a Dana 44) I know it will burn more fuel and turn higher RPM on highway, but I do almost no highway. May take it to the strip, though.

Using a TH350 as a reference point to consider gears with the 700r4. 3.33 gears will produce roughly the same speed at 5,000 rpm as 4.11 gears in the TH350 in first gear. If my memory is correct at 5,000 rpm in second it will make roughly the same speed as 3.50 gears. Not a direct answer but some numbers I came up with using an online calculator. Hope it helps.

I'll say this... Just my opinion, because I do not have a lot of experience with this OTHER THAN driving several different gear sets, but only fun drives never for a week or whatever straight. Plus I can't figure it out myself and the damn things are so expensive compared to straight axles to change....

Like everything, it is up to YOU. I have been in a L98 c4 vette with :
-2.59 horrible
-3.07 better -auto / 4+3
-3.45 decent
-3.55 decent/good - 4+3 trans
-3.73 good

I had an '89 with light mods and 3.07 gears but a great stall for the car. I mean it was really matched well and I bought the car used so no idea what it was, but it made the car. Right now I'm trying to figure out that recipe. If I could have a matched combo like that in this car I would probably be happy. For an almost stock car it actually pulled really hard, and would beat on my Dad's almost stock '86 4+3 and he hammered through the gears and that thing felt like a torque machine too down low.

If you have an lt1 I think you could go lower for a street car if you think gears are what you are looking for.

L98 stock motor I'd think 3.55 max for sure and that will be a short burst of fun.

Each person describes it differently and without intended goals it's just a gear change.

I can say personally no way I would put a 3.33 in. Just me. It would not be low enough.

I don't race, and I don't do many high speed runs. I just like the snap and to jump on it once and while.

Fbody car guys always do gears, look around at their info.

I used to have mustangs and 3.73-4.10 was the PERFECT standard upgrade. (different animal though)

mrodoc, I've heard a "rule of thumb" that for every 0.1 change in gear, you get half that (0.05) change in ET.

Example: Go from 3.33 to 3.73 is 0.4 gear change, yielding 0.2 second faster 1/4.

Just what I've heard referenced before.

So, from a 2.59 to a 3.33 is 0.74 gear change, maybe a 0.35 faster ET?

Back in the day we figured a second in the 1/4 mile was 4 car lengths...so .35 is a length and a half ? Visualize that and it becomes significant.

FyI, at 100 mph trap speed 1 second is 146 ft difference which is about 9 car lengths.

Just went from 2.59s to 3.54s, and I am very happy with the improvement. 60 mph is 2k, and it will shred the tires. Just got to be careful leaving a stop light, and turning. It shifts into 2nd about half way through the turn, and if you are giving it too much gas, she'll be coming around. h
