Good day to all of you i need your help with a air intake. Ive finally put in my 383 and used the Dynamic EFI system as my engine management. Many thx to Bob for all his help. I still have the stock air intake ( air box MAF sensor and TB) and i've noticed on the dyno pulls that the manifold pressure is dropping big time. Which means it not getting enough air. So I've ordered a new 58mm TB . Im looking at a custom pipping to get air from a generic Filter ( k&N) to the TB. What size tubing can i use (what will fit between the hood and radiator ) I'm hoping a 3 inch to 3.5 inch will fit. Any help or pictures would help thc Chris
383 ci
6 inch rods
forged piston
forged crank
arp bolts everywhere
Edelbrock heads pro ported and flowed
mini ram port matched
compression about 11/1
30 lbs injectors
header and 3 inch from to back
so it's pretty standard but it's only pulling 347hp at the wheels. With the dynamic efi and tunerpro I can log the dyno runs and I see a big drop in manifold pressure from 102kpa to 73.5 which means it needs more air. I still have a stock TB and air filter with the MAF but with the Dynamic upgrade I run a MAP so I don't need the MAF. All I need is a coupler to the new 58 mm TB and I think custom piping to a universal k&n air filter ( ill make a cold air housing ). What size piping can I use?
Not much room over the radiator. About 2 1/2 inches at best. I tried Flattening a piece of four inch aluminum tubing where it goes over the radiator but that didn't work very well. I ended up fabricating a filter housing that is shaped much like the original but much wider going to a 4 inch tube to the throttle body.
I have one of those ram air whatever the hell kits from breathless performance, and since I don't run a MAF either, literally put a piece of 3" pipe in there to bridge the gap where the MAF was.
There's all kinds of room for a 3" pipe there, isn't that the inner diameter of the MAF anyways? I'll slap up a picture of my rather ghetto but functional intake lol

That is a huge vacuum loss down to 73.5 KPA, almost hard to believe. Do you have the screens pulled out of the MAF? If you are dropping down to the 73 KPA range you are giving up big power. My car with a 406 making 460 HP to the rear tires was only dropping to 88 KPA at WOT with the descreened MAF, when I went to a 4" MAF and redid the aircleaner housing for a 4" inlet I was able to get the vacuum drop to 95 KPA and the power picked up to 480 RWHP.
The stock filter housing has a huge restriction over the radiator. With a 4 inch tube and no MAF necked down to fit the stock filter housing I was under 95 KPA by 4000 RPMs. Now I have not seen data logs under 99 KPA at 6000. We designed this using the area of a 4 inch circle which is 12.566 square inches and kept the area of every place from the filter to the tube larger than 12.566 square inches. I can stick my hand down the tube and touch the back of the filter with my fingers. It's good to have a fabricator friend that likes do stuff like this.
I've been thinking about getting this aftermarket Corsica air filter and housing kit for a 2009 Z06 and adapting it for my 85
Here is the photos I got off of ebay from a smashed up hole car fore sale. Its massive
Something like one of these would solve the problem and really help considerably overall
So yes the MAF has no screens I doubled checked just to be sure and the WUD clearly shows the very low kpa readings. I was really surprised too. At least i now know what to correct. RWDsmoke i like your setup will try to fabricate something similar to your setup

Just in case you need your car to suck up a small child. Lol!
