On the bmw's the mechanical fan cars are automatics and the manual cars have all electric fans.

The a/c condenser also can have a fan too. Its not for the motor but strictly for the air conditioning. It wont even come on unless the a/c is on with some models and on the others its either a/c or nearly overheated.

When I converted the 323i to manual I was going to leave the mechanic fan on. Didn't take long for me to realize the racket the mechanical fan made with the rpm's you get up to with a stick shift being a bad combo so I switched it to an electric fan.

Still trust mechanical fans more.
