So there have been a few good suggestions on the rich smell. Another thing to check, the oxygen sensor and the thermac. Do the flaps on the air cleaner ever open up?
For the oxygen sensor, there is a way to test it with a paper clip on the aldl connector but that eludes me at the moment. It will also tell you if you're running rich or lean. I'll see if I can dig it up.
The other thing it could be is if the cat is gutted or bad and broken you'll get that smell too.
On the coolant sensor, does the car ever idle down to ~7-800 rpms? It never will if that isn't reading right.

Vacuum leaks are easy, using starting fluid just spray around the throttle body bases, the lids and vacuum ports. If you get a sudden rpm change there is an air leak.
For timing, that may be easier to watch a YouTube video on. But I will say this, to get it in base timing mode there should be a tan white with a black stripe by the brake booster with a plug in the middle. Disconnect that before starting.
And before all this, did you disconnect the battery while doing the cap and rotor. If so the high idle may be the fact that the iacs haven't done their relearn yet.

Yea. You unplug the connector then remove the 4 or 5 torx screws on the top plate and pop it out. Pretty simple.

Well, the old adage goes, if it ain't broke then don't fix it. If you're concerned about the fuel smell get it hooked up to a scanner but honestly, a little fuel won't kill it.

We go over that way quite often. To the fair, occasionally a Corvette show in Canfield, etc. Once spring gets here and the roads are dry, I'll drive over that way and meet you in the middle somewhere. We can have coffee and I'll hook the scanner on your car and see what we can see. I don't know what all yours will report, but at least we can look for codes and anything else it will tell us.
