It sounds to me like you have a dead battery.
to hot rod roy…………...thought I was responding to another member with the ha ha....first time using this program...….let me know if I am talking to you?
it sounds like an electrical problem. Things I would check are:
1) Battery voltage at the battery
2) Measure the Ohms from the positive cable terminal at the battery to the other end at the starter solenoid (checking for resistance in the cable). You will disconnect the cable to do this.
3) Remove the starter and have it tested
In my experience, starting problems are usually in the starter, but when dealing with cars of this age, cable corrosion/degradation is also a common issue
yes it clicks then finally the starter engages after several attempts
Then its probably spark, have battery load tested, inspect the terminals for tightness or corrosion, then go through the hot wire to the starter and inspect the ground cable from the battery to the frame.
I had the same symptoms in my 95 coupe when I first bought it. Ended up that I had a dead winding in my starter. Replaced the starter, haven't had the problem since.
Sounds like it could be starter solenoid to me. I have had similar problems and loosened the nut holding the contact for the positive cable on the solenoid and pushed the contact in and rotated it 180 degrees and reassembled then it was like new. Good luck.
