Well............ after a good night's sleep and some better early morning light, I noticed that it's possible to plug that fuel sender connector in backwards.... . Duh !!!!
Somewhere along the way the night before, I blew out the FP1 Fuse. I replaced the 10 Amp fuse and Zoom Zoom . The fuel gauge reads 1/4 tank, and with another five gallons, reads 1/2.
Takeaways.... Don't rush. . Work in good light. . . .Keep the traction control off !

One more thing. Before you button up, test. Then test again. Before I put the bulb in final position, I turn the light on to see if it lights up. If it does, I test again then put it in for final assembly.
For what it's worth I just replaced my OEM '93 85K fuel sending unit with a S.S. unit from Rock Auto. Used old fuel pump. That white baffle in the tank bottom looked warped like the one pictured above. Installed sock inline with the baffle. New unit uses the pulse eliminator - short hose with (2) squeeze clamps. Be sure to retrieve and use the little o-rings that are under the top plate bolt heads !!!! Car starts fine but jury is still out since my tank is almost full and that is what gauge reads. Before last fill up it read full with 1/2 tank. I'll update after a drive tomorrow, hopefully I'll see the gauge drop.
Update : my fuel gauge is back ! But so is the SES light when cruising the interstate , even after replacing the faulty EGR valve. Rechecked valve, it holds vacuum. Temp/pressure good, runs great, I can ignore or learn to pull codes and go from there. After all, it's my "always something" car and I love it.
