I’ve got the console apart and removed the pins from the shift levers at the trans. Can’t get the shifter to go into neutral.
ive got the fsm but the directions are pretty vague. Would it be easier to remove the side cover and see what’s going on or would that cause an issue since I’m not sure what gear it’s currently in?

I had the same problem as you. With the pins out of the arms underneath, try moving each arm to the middle of its travel front to back. You'll be in the ballpark. I made a tool to match the picture in the attached article, but without the notch. I made it out of 1/8' steel stock, with a hacksaw and a grinder to get the thickness down. You can see what you have to do in the pictures. The tool goes in the slot under the shifter. It was really easy once you got the tool placed.

I don’t get the picture-is the wire the makeshift tool? Can’t see where it’s being inserted.
The flat slot under the bolt at the top of the picture is what you are looking for. When the shifter is in neutral, the tool slips in the slot and all the shift arms are aligned with that. The tool is shown in the link I attached to my comment above. You don't need the notch cut out the end of it. Keep trying. You'll get this!

This^?
Figured it out. Used a wrench for a dremel to insert in the slot.
