Can anyone tell me what's the widest tire I can fit on a 17X9.5 rim. I'm running 275/40/zr17 and dont ask why but I want to go wider. Is it possible? :steering:
I think the vette ran 285's on 9.5 rims for awhile.
I would say 295 max.
I would consider upgrading to the ZR1 width of 17x11 which can run up to 335's
If you have an 86, the ZR1 wheels will fit the rear perfect (front as well, might get some rub at extreme wheel turn)
The widest seems to the 285/40/17 on the 9.5" but if you go wider I don't know what is compatible but I wouldn't recommend running 285/40's all the way around. It seems you need to go with the 17x11's like said or go with the 18" on the back and the 17" on the front. The 18x10.5 will handle a 295/35.
A matching set with 17 on the front and 18 on the back would be 265/40-17(front ) and 295/35-18(back) which is what the C5 options are. :skep:
I was thinking about putting on some Firestones and they say they seem to be a bit narrow, would it make sense in this case to go to a 285/40/17 instead of the 275 ,would it make any bad things happen? I also have a 1990

Are you using wheels with the specific ZR-1 offsets or an AFS type wheel with the 38mm front (17x9.5) and 36.5mm rear (17x11) offsets?
I test-fit a 17x9.5 wheel on my 87 and in the rear the clearance looks pretty slim. I may take a wheel and tire off my 92 to test turning clearance in the front. I'm curious as I want a set of wheels I mount for autocross and occasional track use.

You might be gaining only a 1/2" with.....it doesn't seem to be worth it. Like I said 285's on all 4's is not recommended and to match the 285's on the back you would have to get 255/40's on the front for correct revs.
c4cruiser is right about the offset on the rims. You better look into that first. They have spacers for the different offset. I think 90 rims on a 86 needs spacers.
On my vette I will be getting a nice set of Chrome Sawblades and want to buy some Fatts for the back.. Is 185/40/17 My tire of choice.. Or should a 195 fit?
185 or 195? I hope you ment 285 or 295? My little 4 banger toyata has bigger tires than 195'z. Have fun trying to get those tires to stick to the road much less fit on that rim if you were in fact correct with your tire choice :nonod:
