On this 50th anniversary of America's true original Sports car :chevy It's a damn shame that GM has allowed the new kid on the block, VIPER :boxing to continue whooping our ***** stock for stock ...
Well, everyone's entitled to their opinion but I disagree with this one. The Viper is rather ugly in the nose IMHO, It costs a LOT more money, gets far worse gas mileage and has no heritage at all.
I absolutely LOVE my '96 vette's ability to literally shred the tires and still get near 30 mpg on a long trip. There is no question that Chevy could shovel in enough horsepower & torque to blow a viper away easily but then the car would be... well, it'd be a Viper...
The two cars appeal to two different markets IMO. If you want to go faster than a Viper in a Chevy buy a '70 Chevelle, stick a ZL1 block in it and slap on a set of slicks, use the leftover $60K to place bets.
My friend beat two on the street with his stroker C4...two different cars and drivers, a 98 gts and a 99 gts. A mid 12 second (street time) vette on a drag radial will take a stock viper 95% of the time. Most viper drivers don't know how to launch the car properly... couple that with it's poor off the line traction and the race is usually won in the first 60 ft. The 98 gts did go 12.3 at the track but only once when he got lucky with the launch...other times were 12.6- 13.0s
Ok so I never beat a viper in my Vette :( I tried once ....
When I used to own my Grandnational ... I raced one and did beat one.
I used to tell everyone I did and they would tell me I was telling fish stories!!
One day out crusing two of my GN Buddies posted against one side by side!!!
To make matters even better there was a passenger in the rear of one the GN's with a cam corder!!!!!
Any one care to host the video to see the outcome ??
A real world street race ....
The more stock GN beats it hands down... and the other with only a few bolt ons only bout 1,500 dollars worth stock bottom end ... well .... :D
See for yourself ... Please host the video clip someone?
I'll email it to you!!
I guess the moral of the story is Leave a viper alone unless you have a BUICK?? Hehe..... :D
I'll bet I've been liined up next to a Viper 30-40 times within various Vette vs Viper shootouts, and other times just racing with some buddies. For the most part I've gotten the better of them, however typically my opponents driving skills have been less than perfect.
But a friend of mine who after quite a bit of practice became a very good driver in his 97 GTS with Headers, slicks and skinnies and some other bolt-on type stuff have raced each other many times with us basically going back and forth in some very good mid 11 second races... I would always have a stronger 60 ft, but he'd have a few more mph... somtimes I was able to hold him off... sometimes not. (This is forum member Venom Lover, who used to be on the forum)
With a good driver, the Viper is the real deal.... in all my years of drag racing I haven't seen anything off the factory floor that can compete with them. Might be something that can, I just haven't seen it.... our Z06 is probably 4-5 tenths away from them on average.
Don't ever be afraid of racing a Viper..... its fun !! In addition, for every one I've seen run low 12's, I've seen one run mid 13's too.

Re: Vette vs Viper (Southern Comfort)
Last night, one was pulling on the freeway in front of me. I didn't really hit it because I didn't want to start something I'd loose. But, he decided to show me what he had. Looked good! Don't think I'll be racing one anytime soon.

It's a damn shame that GM has allowed the new kid on the block, VIPER :boxing to continue whooping our ***** stock for stock :( I fear that this trend will continue into the next decade.
And I hope they stay shamefull if it means the price for a Vette is $30K less then a Viper. It is easy enough to make a viper eater with the savings between the two.
Vipers don't bother me... I've been beaten ONCE by a Viper, a Hennessy car, back when my '90 was just a heads/cam motor. I put nitrous on it and went looking for him after that incident...Never found him...
Since that time my car has seriously gone down in ET and I've raced many Vipers since, including several on the bottle, haven't been beaten again. Stock to stock if the Viper owner can drive it's not much of a fight, the Vette will lose. And, Vipers on the bottle are WICKED!!! Like almost 800 tq wicked...

With the introduction of the C6, 450 BHP We will continue to be outgunned. Chrysler played it's hand by introducing the new VIPER before GM introduces C6, you would think that GM would take full advantage and introduce a 500 BHP C6 That way the playing field would be a little bit more equal.
I would have to disagree. Although the new Viper is faster than the Vette, it is only .4 seconds faster in the 1/4 mile.(according to Car and Driver) The Viper has a 95 HP advantage over the Vette and is only beating it by .4 seconds? Not to mention it is $30,000 more expensive. Is it me or does something not compute. With the rumored 450 HP Vette this should be enough to, at the least, equal the Viper.
I dont know what year it was but there was a viper at the track(raceway park) this past weekend(Corvette Challenge) and it was a timmid garden snake at best. It did spin abit off the line but the best I saw it do was 12.77 @ around 111mph and I saw him do that twice. I was pushin the big papa 85c4 to 12.70 @ 108 but I couldnt get to line up with him cause he was running in a different class. I was pissed, the first race I saw he races a Z06 and if the C5 driver had alittle more 1/4 mile knowledge(no burn out with BFG draqg's on ) :banghead: they would have skinned that pos mopar.

Yea, with what I paid for my '90, plus every penny I'll spend on the 427 swap, I could do that over 3 times and still have less money spent that I would on a Viper. I'll be making at least 500hp. Maybe more.
I know the Viper guys would say they put $85k in and get that much more out so I've actually SPENT more money than them. Oh well.
This is a slippery slope. Your basic question is answered by saying stock Viper to stock Vette - we get our butts waxed. I can mod my Vette and beat a stock Viper. He can mod his Viper and then what do I do?

:chevy You are driving the LEGEND...the snake can't take that away :chevy
I'm only 15 so my comments probably aren't going to be acknowledged but I'll say it anyway. The simple fact about all of our corvette engines is they are restrictive in some way or other, they all have bad exhaust for example, I've done very little research on vipers, but the way I hear it is they are as flowed as they can go, and look at their engine size, 488 with only 500hp, a Chevy 454 had 560+ with the proper exhaust. I'm not making any excuses, so I'm not going to say that we have a legend or something like that, what I will say is that no matter how much they spend to mod their cars, we can spend less and still spank them because they cost twice as much, if it was me I'd invest in John Lingenfelter's new $50,000 package for C5's and just let them mod till the day they die and the next five generations after them are still paying back their debt when I've got a vette with 1100 hp 1.97 sec. 0-60, 9 second 1/4 mile. Just let 'em try to take you.
Never raced a Viper - got barely beaten by a Mustang once, but hey I had a leaking head gasket so I consider it a wash. But a Vette has to be a better car - just got a Motor Trend with a Mini Cooper Ad. It includes "bogey" stickers to place on the side of your Coop for all of the cars you'll be knocking off. No Vette stickers, but along with an assortment of Bugs, SUV'S & Civics, it includes 4 stickers that bear a strong resemblence to a Viper. The Coop knows better than to take on a Vette!
I have beaten several stock Vipers on street and track, and lost to one outside Baltimore on a roll on start. I still think the Corvette is way better in alot of ways......The PROOF.... last years tuner challenge.... Lingenfelter won the hole thing ...Autothoritys porsche took second and I can't remember who took third It may have been one of the three heavily modified Vipers, that could not handle or get going fast enough to touch the Corvette or porsche....Now that should be enough to put this to rest......
Yeah Smoked a VIPER HARD! He had no Chance from the get to here is the story.....
Viper sees me about 10 cars ahead and no one on the road...he comes flying up on me and gets next to me i look over at him :nono: and he gives me the  look so we get to a light and i tell him... you have a nice car what year is it :yesnod: he says "2001 viper and i make 500hp" :skep: i said "yeah maybe at the flywheel" so light turns green and we are off i get the whole shot but my traction is horrible  but i realize i am pulling on him while i am smoking my tires :lolg: and i go into second and pull hard with traction and go into drive and he is about 3 cars behind me hitting is rev limiter or something trying to catch me and he had no chance...so at the next light he tells me he could not hook up i looked over and laughed and said "yeah with all the 500hp and 335/35/18's it would be hard to hook up i guess" so he punches it again getting a jump on me i still caught up and pulled right by...it was alot of fun. Now i have see him 2 times now driving around he shows me no love! he thought he could pick on a little vette he bit more then he could chew!
Oh my favorite comment he tells me...i added an exhaust and made 90 hp? :skep: yeah right!
