few months ago, I changed an outer tie rod end. brought a moog cause I thought it was the best. after 3 track events, the boot split right in half, and all the grease oooozzzzzzzzzz all over. so I went to change the boot, and after removing the nut, the tie rod end dropped out !!!! usually you need to hammer them out, use a splitter fork, something. this just dropped out.
so I changed the boot, and retorqued it back down to over spec. but now it seems I have a little play. the spindle looks good, and I'm not sure where to go with this.
I'm actually thinking of changing this tie rod end AGAIN. the car seems the track and I need to feel comftable with the suspension.
I just put that same brand on my car.. $80 each. I think they come with a life time warranty.. I would take it back and lets hope that was just a blem that snucked out the door.
I recall you do track events?? I don't know how hard you drive the car/late braking but at 8/10's the brakes will get hot enough to burn up the rubber boots, and boil out the grease. Not sure what liner Moog uses inside their tie rod ends, but my guess is it got hot enough to ruin the liner.
FWIW some guys have had luck wrapping the tie rod end & boots with the silver Thermo-Tech heat tape.
Part of the problem is the aluminum steering knuckle is very efficient at transferring the heat directly into the tie rod shaft/stud.
I never burned tie rod boots, only capiler dust seals :D
I just replaced the boot with energy suspension, and I am watching it carefully. I am also unsure about the amount of play I have is so minimal, and I am unsure of where it is coming from.
