Yesterday while dyno tuning a 86 TPI car that was built by an unscrupulous and unamed mechanic, we decided to dyno my 2002 Suburban for kicks and giggles. It all started during the tuning session with customer of a friend of mine that wanted me to tune his newly built 86 350 L98 C4.
After spending over $12K on an egine build up, the poor guy had a engine that was using oil and smoking. The engine guy had SYNTHETIC oil in there as break in lube. Installed the largest Crane Compu-Cam, ported his heads but didn't do anything to the intake manifold. Added Hooker super comp headers and removed the cat and "made" a Y pipe.
After about 3 hours of tuning with a wide band I managed to sqeak out 248Hp and 350 Ft/lbs of torque from a dismal 202Hp and 310 ft/lbs before I touched it. My good old friend made his customer (his friend as well:)) a bet that my Suburban would blow his C4 away by at least 100Hp, and the guy took it! So the bet was on......after strapping the 6900lb beast on we made a run, I was surprised as well as I haven't dyno'd it since installing and tuning the blower in. Here is the dyno sheet:
Hmm that would be a good one :) I got double the weight but nearly double the power...it would be a good test thats for sure. Maybe I should give him a chance to win his lunch back :)
That kinda puts that bad feeling in th epit of your stomach. Did you tell him to get that synthetic outa there and put some Dino fluid in so the rings would seed? Should be good for some more power getting rid of the blow-by.
Yes, we drained it and installed the MISSING dip stick so he could at least check the oil level. He didn't tell us who did this rebuild. But I got the feeling that it was some back yard mechanic. My friend that runs the shop may have to get into the front of the engine. The Pete Jackson gear drive doesn't sound right to me, I have a feeling it's installed wrong. Once that is corrected and he gets some miles on the engine my friend is going to do a courtesy dyno run for him. I really felt for the kid, I didn't charge him near what I normally would have charged for a stranger to burn a custom chip. I hate it when I hear about people getting ripped for engine work.
If I had the Vette out there that day I would have ran it on the dyno. I guess its going to have to wait until I get another call for a dyno tune job at that shop or when I get my own dyno :) Which if all goes right will be in Mid January.
it just gos to show you you can not just throw parts at it and think its going to run good numbers people just do not understand its not that simple but after $12000 later maybe he learned a very valuble lesson but probally not
That's got to hurt. My 91 made 251 RWHP with a cat back, K&N, and MSD. No other bolt ons, just tuning. Oh I almost forgot, I have an airfoil, so that probably helps. lol I hope that you can get the car straightened out, it sounds like it could have potential. Killer numbers on the SUV.
