Just got the the new engine put back together. Tried to fire it up and it won't run. It fires but won't catch. I have double checked everything that I can think of. Fuel pressure and oil pressure is good.
Any suggestions? I'll try anything at this stage.
Cheers
I would double check the usual, but be sure to check the sensors on the front of the intake manifold under the TB, if its off, the engine will not start. Also the ECM leads and fuses, the injector harness, check the timing, and make sure your esc wire is connected, check firing order. The connectors on the distributor cap are a pain to get on, sometimes they dont get on right.
I hope its something silly like that, and not your cam....
keep us posted. Maybe you should get some rest and get a fresh perspective in the morning when your not so tired, frustrated, and there is more light!
Check **timing**, check for vacuum leaks, there's a couple of ideas.
Did you just through in a rebuilt motor or is this a custom engine.
Custom engine.
1989 auto, 355ci , superram, 219 cam, new ported heads, long tube headers. I am waiting on a custom chip but it should still run (shouldn't it?).
Also I am not tired. I'm in Australia so it is the middle of the day here. If I don't get it started soon I will start to get tired though.
Start with checking the timing and the order of your spark plug wires. I have seen the wires run in the wrong direction. The firing order is 18436572 make sure the direction you connect the wires is the same direction the rotor turns.
To set the timing without having the engine running do the following. Crank the engine over until the timing mark is at 8 degrees BTDC with the number one cylinder on the compression stroke. Then make sure the rotor is pointing at the number one sparkplug wire. Replace the dist cap, turn the ignition to "on" and move the distributor back and forth until a spark is fired out the number one wire. You will need to have the spark plug wire disconnected from the plug, put a screwdriver or something in the end of wire so that you can see a spark jump to ground. When the spark is fired the timing is set at 8 degrees, tighten the dist. and try to start the car. Do you know if you have spark?
