Default DUMB ECM QUESTION????

JUST A PASSING THOUGHT.......I HAVE A GRANATELLI MAF SENSOR THINKING ABOUT USING IT ON MY 94LT1 AS FOLLOWS.....PUT THAT PUPPY ON AND RUN IT FOR A WEEK OR TWO BEFORE THE ECM ADJUSTS TO THE INCREASE AIR FLOW ....I'LL JUST PULL THE BATTERY CABLE OFF FOR AWHILE AND JUST RESET THE ECM..AND START OVER AGAIN .......CAN I GET AWAY WITH THIS WITHOUT FRYING OR MESSGTHE ECM. :conehead

Default Re: DUMB ECM QUESTION???? (redcorvettedave)

Contrary to beleif the PCM will not "learn" the new MAF. The problem with them aftermarket MAF sensors or "gutted" MAF sensors is that their output may or may not be the same as a calibrated OEM sensor. By this I mean that within the PCM programming there are 4 tables for the MAF sensor calibration. These tables correlate to a STOCK GM sensor calibration for a given airflow. Now a aftermarket sensor such as a GMS may or may not give the same output for the same air flow as a stock sensor. In that case the PCM will either be adding or subtracting too much fuel. Then the O2 sensors will be telling the PCM that its too lean or rich, the the PCM will "trim" the fuel curves according to what the PCM sees from the O2 sensors. And depending on how much "error" there was in the GMS or other aftermarket sensor the PCM may or may not be able to correct using the preset trim levels.

My suggestion, leave the stock GM sensor in there. I have not ever seen any proven and documented gains with an aftermarket sensor.
