Default Top Gear Warning

Top Gear, the BBC Motoring program has just started running on Discovery channel. It was on last night and they're running episodes from last season.

Can we agree now that we'll boycott the Corvette episode when it reruns? I can't stand the vitriole again

Please, be kind to your Brit members.

Well, after their slanted review of the C6, I don't hold any value in
anything they have to say. I won't be watching their show anyway!

DeeGee ... You're a good egg around here. Don't worry about things like that ... we got your back ... Brit or not.

I just watched an installment this week and it was very entertaining. The cars they reviewed were some that most of us here would lust after.

They featured the Swedish supercar called the Konigsegg that puts out 655 bhp and does 0-60 in 3 sec. It's a beautiful car and the exhuast note is to kill for. It purportedly outruns the McLaren F1. (I still think the F1 is more desireable.)

They also "reviewed" the Lotus Exige, the Maserati Quattroporte sports sedan, the Porsche Carrera, the Jag XKR and the incredible Bowler Wildcat, a sub 5 sec. 4-wheeler that can be raced at Baja without any mods.

There was no objective testing done on the show - rather, the hosts' self-deprecating opinions were served up as gospel. Their conclusions were based on published data, their own driving experiences with the cars and a supposedly professional test driver's circuit-lapping results at the converted Harrier assembly plant they use as their studio and testing grounds.

One amusing test they did was to drive a Citroen 2CV 50 yards behind a stationary 747 with engines at full throttle to see what would happen. It destroyed the car, blowing some of the body panels completely off and rolling the car completely over and off the tarmac.

I think it's a great show if you realize that they car ratings are very subjective and heavily slanted toward the Euro-mentality. Top Gear and Fifth Gear are two shows that, IMO, should be viewed primarily for their entertainment value and to take a peek at the European way of looking at cars.

The bosses at GM should fess up to the mistake of the C6 styling. The 6s frame and powertrain layout are still really close to the pioneering and successfull C5, so nothing new there. Maybe its time to start thinking mid engine for the C7, something new for a change. Something along the lines of the Konigsegg in the looks department would be a HUGE step back toward the high-water mark set by the C5.

Just e-mail the discovey network with your displeasure of the show. If everyone here did that, the show would be gone really soon.

Ahh, who cares? I don't base my decisions about cars on those two nimrods. My biggest complaint is that they're standing there in front of a crowd trying to be witty. It's so annoying. Just show me the freak'n cars. They do have great cinematography though.

I much prefer Fifth Gear... Tiff Needell is so much cooler than the annoying Top Gear guys, and you know he's a legitimate driver. Still prefer those shows to C&D and Motor Weak -- like I car about the new Hyundai SUV!!!

I saw one in person in Scottsdale Lambo...very cool but the interior didn't suit it. It was sort of luxury like a Rolls.

Top Gear is another great BBC show. Don't know of any American TV shows that come close to showing as many exotic and different cars. I will be watching.

I also enjoy the show. The host are often funny. Anyway, I watch it for the cars not the host. And sometimes they have off the wall comparisons that are quite entertaining. It is one of the more interesting shows out there.

It's a show people...take it as nothing more than it is: entertainment with opinions.

They don't like Vettes. Who cares? Does that make the show useless? I don't think so

It's still one of the greatest sources to find out about new cars and see them in action, being pushed to the limit.

And honestly, you expect them to like the Vette when they compare it to Astons and Ferraris? Please...we all know the workmanship on the Vette leaves much to be desired. Interior is very important to these people (they are in Europe after all) and the Vette has none.

Oh yeah...for what it's worth

- Clarkson loved the SRT-10 Viper when he drove it.
- On Fifth Gear (the other British auto show, the one with Tiff Needel), they thought the C6 was much better than the SRT-10.

Just something to chew on.
