I am 37 so not technically there but close. To be honest I don't give a crap what they think. Some people have the "its his midlife crisis" attitude. Some have the "he is trying to compensate" attitude. I personally think most of that is just jealousy. I don't rub it in anybody's face. I just treat it like a nice car and show that I am proud of it and I think all of my friends and family know I worked hard for it. I guess I am to old now for witty comebacks. I just dont give a flip! I HAVE A VETTE!
Oh and welcome to the club! You are going to love the car.
I havent had anyone say anything other than nice car. I would tell them I have wanted one for a long time and can finally afford one. Oh, by the way, I turn 40 this year. Lets see what happens.
I never tell anybody when l buy and sell and then buy again. Most people really cannot tell the diff between years anybody. The dumb ones always ask how many miles it has and thinks that the lowere the mileage the better the vehicle. Now that's dumber then dumb. Why own a vette if you cannot drive it unless you cannot afford it and then you can use it as a planter.
In today's world a C5 in not expensive compared with Asian imports but the fact that it's not a main car what drives people crazy.
What l do is l always tell them that l always had it period. You should see their faces.
What sort of tactics (ie...comebacks) have people used to deal with the typical BS received when you are over 40 and buying a Corvette?
I am in sales and have thick skin so I really don't care what people think. I just want a good collection of comebacks ready.
hehehehehehe
Soon to be a C5 owner...
I tell them I haven't owned a slow car since I was 17 and I'm not starting now. Some grow up as they get older. I didn't nor do I intend to. Life is way to short to drive minivans and SUVs.
Q: Mid life Crisis?
A: HEY, that will make a great license plate, Thanks.
Q: Compensation for something?
A: Yeah I guess your wife (momma, sister) told you.
True for me on more than one occasion -
Q: Mid life Crisis?
A: I told my wife I wanted a Vette or a girl friend for my birthday. She helped me pick out the Vette.
Really I have only had a couple of direct questions about the crisis thing. I don't care and tell them what ever they wanna hear. I hope when I'm 60 or 80 I'll be having my "Second Childhood".
If I can hobble my old a## out to my Vette then I hope to have one until I am dead. May take me 20 minutes to get in but oh what a time when I get in it. Just have to remember to wear my depends!
Disclaimer: I am not flaming the older Vette drivers. You guys rock!
Main thing is you enjoy it. Those that comment on your age will always comment about something negative for some reason. I had my first Vette when i was 20 and didn't have another till i was over 60. Have had two since then. When i was 20 it was cool and a Girl Magnet, now i appreciate the car and take much better care of it.
Average age of our Vette Club members is probably over 40.
Most comments i get are about how great the car looks. When kids say nice car, then usually "want to Trade"...i say "straight across i Suppose" and that usually breaks the ice....
Best comebacks when you suspect or they infer Age...
You think the car is Nice....You ought to see MY "Wife"
You can tell the Age of the Boys by the Size of their Toys..
or...Maybe you can afford one When you Grow up....
Haven't really had to use these, most people appreciate the car and have questions, which is fun.
I'm 43 now , and have owned several c4s in the past decade or so before falling in love with my c5 . Just don't see the problem with being over forty and driving a Vette . when was forty OLD anyway ?
it seems to me that a hardly see 20 somethings driving vettes , but I see a lot of 30s ad beyond drive them .
it's really not the price that keeps the young away from Vettes , it's the insurance , you almost have to be "OLD" to afford buying insurance for a Vette . And I kinda like that , Let the youngin's drive the ricers instead .
i used to ride a harley years ago,when i turned 42 i bought a new harley & 2003 i bought a 2001 vert,i got the same {bs} oh that over 40 syndrome etc.you know what it really means,you got it NOTHING....
This is funny, I just turn 39 years old last month. bought my black z06 2001 last year. The vette club i go to...i'm the youngest, but at the import club meet..i'm the oldest. Should see some of the kids dool on my car and flip out when i tell them how little i pay for car insurance. Some of them say" i can buy a car like this" but can't afford the insurance.
I all ways wanted a vette when i was 16 years old. Now my kids and wife have their need's met... My turn!
if some says to you Mid life Crisis line, say no! i'm picking up your wife or your girlfriend.

Oldtimer
I bought my first vette new in 64 and I think I had more smart remarks made to me at that time then I do now. Seems like all I get now are a lot of thumbs up. I would say people think it's great that a older guy has Corvette. Do you need a car like a Corvette, no. Do you want a car like a Corvette, OH YES.
In may case, I have wanted a Vette since I was, I don't know ... 12? I always had fast cars, Camaros, Chevelles, Novas etc. but never a Corvette. I finally reached a point in my life were I could go out and buy one that was a few years old and started looking. When I found one, I was all jacked up about it then wanted to walk away from the deal in the end. Kid in college, 2 more in the wings to go ... I just couldn't justify it. It just seemed to "selfish" and I told my wife that I was going to just walk away from the the whole thing. Then my wife (who ended putting the deposit on the car at the dealer when I was away) said to me, "Why? You don't work hard enought to deserve this car? Buy it!" So I did ... Best dang car I ever owned. What people think/say ... who cares. I still own a Vette and they don't!
