I believe that it'll go to 4th gear as soon as it can. It knows when you require more power to the ground with a load sensor and will kick down to lower gears if needed. My 4L60e did this in my Trans Am. I was in 4th gear around 30MPH if I wasn't on the gas.
i will usually be around 700RPM when i am going 30 and dont have my foot on the gas,if i touch it a little 1000RPm and little more will take me around 1500RPM
Sounds like it's kicking down to 3rd when you touch the gas. 700RPM is too low to maintain speed. The LS1/6s are more efficient around 1200-1500 RPM for low speeds.
That's pretty good. I could NEVER get my 4L60 to do that. Although, I've never owned a sports car for the MPG. So I didn't really try that hard. But still, that's really good. I don't know if I'll ever own another manual, but I know that it's not in the near future. If I ever DO own another auto, I'll give it a real go.
While the "Toyota Prius vs C5 Corvette" video from Garage 419 has been around for some time, it's still pretty neat. Yes, the Prius got better gas mileage, but the C5's numbers were very impressive for a car that's not designed to be an economy car! Here's a link to the video I added to my CorvetteReport.com site...
I'm absolutely convinced that the 6-speed manual C5 coupe is the mileage champ of all regular production vettes. It is so easy to get over 30 mpg on the highway and 34.5 is my best on an extended trip on flat roads. Got nearly 600 miles on one tank of gas. You've gotta have a break before the car needs one.
Well, that's correct. The 6-speeds have the ability to go into a lower gear than a 4 speed. However, the 6-speed autos in the C6s should have similar results to the 6-speed autos.
Since the auto C5s were limited to 4 speeds including the overdrive, there wasn't much that could be done in light of lowering the overdrive gear otherwise the spread between the gears would have been too much, especially when going from 1:1 to overdrive.
I was on the highway for a couple hours the other day and got the average MPG up to 27.1 , can anyone beat that? I've got a 2000 Couple automatic.
Driving home at night from Arlington Highlands to Keller, top down and set the cruise control @ 65, avg 29.8 MPG when I pull into the driveway and shut off the car (6 speed). When I tell people about the MPG I get driving a C5 vert they are all astonish !

On my way to Cocoa beach I averaged ove 32 MPG. This was on my way to the Hot Rod Power Tour. For the whole trip I averaged 29.7. Remarkable considering there was a lot of stop and go plus some spirited driving as well.
