Well this takes it! I rented one of those Containers to put in my driveway so I could redo my Garage, took me longer than I thought,3 months. I have a two car driveway so it took up one spot. My Neighbor calls the town (Hempstead,NY) and complains about it, "says I have a Commercial Container in my Residential Driveway". I get a Notice of Violation, I call and find out that All Containers (PODS included) are outlawed in this town unless you have a Contractor doing at least $25K of Renovations. Turns out this is a new Law as of Nov,2005. They give me 15 days to comply. I finish up and have it picked up.
Here is the Corvette Part, An Inspector comes by Today to check, he sees that the Container is gone and says no problem. However the Neighbor also complained that I am running an Auto Repair Business from my Home, I explain that I repair my own cars and they are all registered to me at this address. The inspector sees my C5 in the Drive under a cover, and says That must also have plates ,be registered, inspected, and insured. I show him that it is, he says OK. If they get any more complaints I will have to prove that I work on my own cars and they must be Registered. ???

Sucks to have neighbors like that. I agree to approach him at least at first on a calm, friendly basis and try to come to an understanding. If that fails, tell him to KYA.
And they get big ***** Syndrome... The irs hounded us after my Grandmother passed away.... Long story longer they hounded us for money and kept coming back for more and more and more for things that no one enforces or even try's too .... The tax attorney and we hired (a great one) laughed at what this simpleton was trying to do!!!
Guess it gives them points on how many people they can bully and harass....
Needless to say after the lawyer got involved and lots of pain and agony we stood up the them and they decide it was in thier best intrest to go away....
If you have a lawyer friend have him write you a nice legal sounding letter maybe to the point of stop harassing my client or we may sue...
I guarantee they will stop bugging you... Some times and empty threat will work wonders .... Especially to the simple minded types that run local politics.....
Just a thought....

I have a similar neighbor problem... not the same issues, but the same kinda actions.
After a number of violation notices from the city, I finally when in and talked to the Code Enforcement suprevisor. He's in charge of all city code enforcement offices.
He was really helpful. He told me that they were leagaly compelled to act on ALL complaints. I took that to mean, look at the situation and if there really is a code violation then deal with it, but if there is no compaint filed they can look at the situation and move on.
He also told me that he was fully aware of what was going on with my grumpy neighbor. I told him I did not want to escilate this into some kinda of code-enforcement-contest. His recomendation to me was to have lawyer send my nieghbor a letter stating that if I received another notice of violation that I would file for a VPO...
haven't heard from my neighbor since. (oh yeah, I tried the nice guy stuff first)
In New York There are several towns that have adopted unregistered vehicle policy's. You really want the neighbor to have three or four junkers in the dway starting a salvage yard next door to you ! Thats what the law is trying to prevent. I agree that a car under a cover is a stretch and thats why the town inspectors have to have a brain in enforcement. we all know that that does not always happen !!! barney fyfe syndrome ya know !!!QUOTE=Vega$Vette]Hate to go against the grain here but.
If you were in fact in violation by having the container parked there for 3 months how do you feel wronged if someone complained?
Sounds like he's making it up as he goes!
I don't believe any state requires a vehicle to be registered and/or insured/inspected etc. unless it is driven on a public right of way.[/QUOTE]
I have a neighbor who leaves a boat in his driveway for months at a time. This is in violation of subdivision rules that he agreed to when he built his house. I don't want to cause problems with him and wonder how to approach the subject. I would never call the officials but it does distract from the look of the neighborhood and property values. It wouldn't hurt to look at this from other prospectives.

Just to clarify, When I finally decided that my Garage was impossible I looked for a method to really do it right not in a haphazard way ( do the floor, walls etc). In my immediate area there are 10 PODS and 3 Containers, have been for months. In fact the Container I rented has a brother that I took the phone number from last August ( it's still there). Had I know it was illegal I would have gone another route, I was even thinking of buying one of those Home Depot sheds and then selling it.
As soon as I learned that there was a violation, I called to have it picked up and it was.
The part that got me was: Selective enforcement and the issue of running an Auto Repair business. It would seem to me that more than the say so of an individual was needed. When I first called to speak with the Enforcement person I asked him if they were doing some kind of Blitz in the area, he said No in fact "I have not been down that way in a while".
So his Notice to me was based on simple Hearsay. I know that would be denied but kinda makes one think. Who knows who?
In terms of running a Junkyard, since Iv'e lived here I have owned four Porsches, and two Corvettes. Maybe my switch to Vettes got to him.
I actually served on the board in our association when I lived down south. No matter how reasonable you try to be about bylaw enforcement you'll always have issues on both sides of the spectrum. Some people nitpicked, but a lot also totally ignored even reasonable regulations after repeated warnings. Unfortunately if everyone was considerate and tolerant at the same time, we wouldn't need HOAs.

Call your neighborhood Covenants and Restrictions Committee and ask them to do their job!
