My 99 FRC with 50k + never had the recall (I think that is a good thing) and never had a problem. BUT two of my friends who have 99's have had problems, so last spring I put in a Thunder Racing CLB. Easy install, no problems, I'm glad it is in there.

Someone modified mine before I became its owner....The column does not lock with engine off-key removed. It remains turnable though firmly in Park, engine off, key removed.
If my car had not been previously modified, I would have installed a CLB kit. In recent months, GM has a final fix recall to remove the locking plate so it will never lock. I would never trust the original design to work forever. It is my belief that several of the one-car crashes we hear about are sudden column locking, not a good thing at speed!
I have only had the message once. I usually turn the key to acc. and pause till the fuel pump stops priming. This time I went staight to start and the car had sat for over a week. The battery was probabally a little low and with the fuel pump, starter and what ever else all taking power at the same time made me get the message,"Remove key for 10 sec".
I purchased my Y2K C5 new back in May of 2000 have not had the CL problem. GM has send me 5 recall notices in the mail to perform the recall....So far so good they will not touch my C5 vette has 15K miles.
I do have the CLB kit just incase it starts to act up ..
Before I bought my 01 Z 06 I wanted to drive a C5 so a buddy loaned me his 01 Coupe. First time I drove it I got the column lock and had to have it towed to the dealer. My Z is a two owner car with 70k miles. I talked to both owners before me and neither had an issue with it nor could I find any service record indicating a column lock issue or that any recall had been done. I am going to do the CLB on it anyway.
I have a 2002 Z06 with 5K miles no problems. However I have two friends that have 2001 Z06s and both have had problems with lock columns, even after taking the cars to the dealers after the first occurrence. I biggest problem occurred with the friend that takes has car out of town. Once he had to leave his key in the car to avoid a problem. The latest was last week the column did not lock however the computer said it was and he was stranded (computer fuel pump cut off) and there were no dealers for seventy (70) miles. This was on a weekend and he had to trailer the car to the dealer Monday and fly back to work. The car is still there? Not an easy fix?
2002 Z06, 34k no problem, but as a just in case i installed a clb last week, 2 days after my friends 99 locked up in his garage and he had to have it towed to a shop
