I personally would much rather have a good printed map at this point -
I have a few friends who have gps's and invariably when we are out in the boonies somewhere, and I say "Hey, you have a gps, which way?" ; I get a long silence, while clicking gps buttons, and then "I did not load this area into the gps..."
It's not like I am anti-technology (quite the contrary) but this technology is jut not there yet -
Now if I was in a boat navigating a tight channel in the dark, or flying a plane at night......might be very useful.
You should get the Garmin 2720 then. It has all of North America preprogrammed. I just updated the maps last week. It's a great gps. It announces the name of the street, not just the distance to turn. Haven't been lost since, and I travel 3 states, lots of small roads. Calculates time of arrival and is always right on.
I use to refer to my navigator (the wife) who is always telling me that I am lost, so to shut her up, I bought my sweet little navigation system and it tells me that I am lost too. No win situation and I got it brand new on ebay shipped to my door for under $400!
Battery powered (car or walking)
North America Map coverage included
WAAS/EGNOS mode
FM Traffic Receiver (part of car charging cable) and only $60 per year
Lots of in-route features as well as history
MP3 Player and SD card slot
USB interface to seperate internal Hardrive
Stop, Detour, finger drag across screen, etc
Sexy Australian Womens voice (Karen)
I use a Rand McNally...it props easily on my lap and with reading glasses down on my nose ,I am good to go anywhere!
As a fail safe I stop and let my wife ask directions..I am a man after all
In a past issue of Cigar Aficionado they compared a lot of the models that have been listed. The Tom-Tom out performed them all. I use a small handheld... I want to do the in-dash Pioneer so I am holding off.

Sony NV-U70 Is a touch screen, lithium ion battery/12 volt cigar lighter operated MARVEL. Nothing to buy or rent ever. USB to your PC for upgrades in the future. And I feel if you can't trust Sony who can you trust?
i just bought a tom tom one. i like it for the size and it has alot of features for the money. its about 4x4 so i mount it right above the insp. sticker beside pillar, touch screen, voice command, blue tooth,3-d maps, and countless points of interest. any town you can tap resturants, motels and address, phone numbers, and directions. pop up. just tap number on screen and it calls it for you and bluetooth takes over. set your own home account on their web-site save maps, add your own directions and your own points of interest, and more i havent figured out yet. i love it. 450 and some change
I use DeLorme's USB GPS attached to my 17" laptop running their Street Atlas USA 2007 software. I can put a couple states on the screen at the same time if I want to, and don't have to squint to see them!!!
I have a Lowrance Iway 500. Hate it. It's the mapping software that really sucks. Newest version, too.
Was in Bedford, In this summer looking at property. I set it to take me to Ind. International Airport and the sucker gets me lost. And that was on all default settings. It was showing me I had to cross I-70 to get there and it's got me on some gravel road that doesn't cross the highway! Plus it sent us to some mystery Johnny Carino's restaurant outside St. Augustine, Fl last summer.
But hell, I can get lost on my own, I don't need $800 of electronics hanging off my windshield doing it for me.
My Iway 500 works great. Just may be off a couple of houses on local streets .. But I found this to be true with other GPS locators. I think they all (Brands)pretty much use NAVTEQ software and any address errors are similar across the spectrum of brands as well. You can write to Lowrance etc and they might send you an updated DVD. The unit is very functional and screen is huge. But pricey
Give it time, it'll get you one day. If you have a free weekend. Drive up to Bedford, Indiana and plug in Indianapolis International Airport. Leave all the settings at default, and see where you wind up. Take a picture of my burnout marks near the chainlink fence overlooking the highway, so I'll know you were there :o)
I've had it take me a couple of different ways due to recent traffic pattern changes-but never across a field.
A coupla pics.
