Back in 87, I knew a guy who was visiting his girlfriend in Santa Barbara when he saw a beautiful (faded, but original silver paint) 65 coupe on a consignment lot. He asked the owner how much the car was and on the following Monday, asked me if I thought $9000 was too much for an all-original 65 C2! I told him to get back there and grab it before it's gone. He did, had it painted white (despite the paint shop owner's suggestion to keep it the original silver color) and parked it in an open lot at his apartment complex. Well, wouldn't you know, it was stolen within a couple of months. Shockingly, he had NO insurance and the car was never found again - sad, very sad.
Expensive storage area/workbench .. is he selling it? At least he didn't store it outside. A little TLC and that vette will be a beauty, great project car !

My Wife (who is a car person herself) hates Barrett-Jackson and enterprises like them and blames them for (these are her words) "Destroying the collectible car hobby for us regular folks" Stating that some people have more money than brains. I myself never wanted a $900K 1969 Baracuda Hemi "clone" built for Timothy O' Leary in 1967 anyway!
The whole Barrett Jackson "Phenom" isn't going to help any of us in our efforts to save any of these cars either.
I enjoy watching the show but have been thinking that it's become a "richie rich" kinda thing - not so much about the cars and what they represent but more about the fact that I have more money than you and although I'm clueless as to actual fair price for anything I buy, boy I sure showed you!

just my 2cents...
Barrett Jackson is for "Wealthy People" nowadays..... Sad...
At least many of these treasures are being stored indoors so they don't deteriorate as fast as sitting outside.
Guess what! Those owners will die eventually and the cars will go to someone who may restore them.

It is sad. We're all wealthy people, just by the way we "enjoy" our vettes and money doesn't enter into it! I'll take my '99 everyday over one that sits in a "shrine" and just exists for it's monetary value in a "harem" of hedge accounts!
It truly is a shame and should be a crime against it. Comments on Barret-Jackson are interesting. Being a local, I do attend but do not support it, if that makes any sense. I mean the cars are awesome but the prices are stupid. On top of that, they double dip on the commision- buyers pays 8%, seller 10%. It is even higher if you bid other than in person.
That would be a nice project. I also think your offer price was more then fair considering it's current condition and the need for restoration. I can see his view also though, He and the Car have many of memories together and more then likely he has a legitimate hope of someday restoring the car. If he sells it to you his hopes and memories become lost. I know where a 58 Corvette is sitting in similar condition and the Lady will not consider parting with it under any condition.
He's gonna restore it huh? From the looks of his garage he couldn't organize a deck of cards much less take on a car restoration.
This guy lives right across the street. We live in a Country Club and I'm not lying he trims his grass with scissors and keeps his home meticulous. Has a 2 car garage that is neat and then the 1 car garage with the Vette in it.
Just don't get it with the Vette.
He comes over and drools over my C5 and my son's FRC and says he wishes he had the mechanical ability that I have. So then I'm back at well then sell it to me and I'll take good care of it.
Oh well when he kicks the bucket someday his kids will sell it to buy a Toyota.
