Hmmm...good thing he's not you cuz he'd be screwing himself out of a LOT of good Vettes out there.

I'm a long, long way from being a C5 expert. However, I've been a member of SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) for over 40 years and a gearhead longer. Historically with cars (and especially Vettes), the first model year of a "new" vehicle is more problematic and the last year or two least problematic. There are always exceptions, but I'll bet it applies to C5's also.

As others have said, look for the one in best condition for your budget. The early C5's problems (whatever they were) have probably pretty much occured and been dealt with by previous owners. However, the more owners and the more miles, the more has probably also been "taken out" of the car.

Why is that? Did I say not to look at 00 and older? 01+ are just better cars in a lot of ways and if he can afford it why look at a car older? You do not make any sense.

Tons of great C5's were born '97-'00. Excluding them from consideration is a bad move.

Yeah man, that's IT.
After 12 Vettes, three of them C5s including an '01 Z06 I and we just don't understand.

You know what they say when you "assume"...

I am not going to write out a list, but pretty much everything in the car improved: engine, interior, some new options, transmission, soft top(verts), sound proofing, etc...Do a search, there should be some links.

it seems like the 97 had more problems and so did the 2000 but i thought they were all the same so why would some have different problems then others?
there are slight differences as the C5 evolved. my advice would be to buy the newest lowest milage car you can afford. milage is important but more important is how the car was treated over the years. do some looking and dont jump on the first thing you find good luck and welcome

Other than the oil consumption issue (I think that was 01?), I haven't heard anything to make me believe one year is more or less reliable than others - that's just unscientific observation by hanging around here a few years.

It comes down to what features you want. If you want convertible, 97 is out. If you want HUD, most of 98 is out too. '01 and later cars have much cheaper tire pressure sensors, but that'll only save you a couple hundred bucks every few years (and they can be turned off). At some point after '99, I believe you can go into the competitive driving mode without having to stop the car... again, pretty minor.

I'm happy with my '99

Consumer Reports rates the 01 with the best dependability...but I would buy any C5. Don't think there is a lot of difference. Go for the one with the lowest miles.

All years C5 are the best

Just depends on what you want and what you can afford

I say newest lowest milage car you can find or afford

Hmmmm, one would have to wonder, could the opinions posted here on the C5 GENERAL FORUM be a little biased??????

Yes, they did. Hardly an "upgrade."
