All you have is bad things to say about the C5..how do you expect people to react..but of course your a "corvette fan." The wife has brainswashed you well.
lol well you'll notice, I'm not listing an Evo as a car to replace my C5 with. I love the car, but I dont want to give up the V8
We did have a drag race (on a track, dont worry) between my friend (a racecar driver) in my C5, and me in the Evo. Despite launching horribly, I still beat the vette easily.
What I can't understand is why do they put performance in such an ugly car The 3000GT was beautiful, one of the best looking ricers I can think of. They should have found a way to make the 3000 body lighter. On second thought, no maybe not, seems like anything good looking scares the ricer consumers off .
If you go with the C6 mine as well wait for the 08, should have an HP increase. This way you will still be happy in 09 or 10 when they again improve the next ricer instead of again needing a newer Corvette. Hopefully 08's Vette takes care of all the ricers they build until 2012 or so
I here you brother, my wife got on fire and wanted a new BULLITT GT MUSTANG in '01. I supported her 100% because she never had FUN cars
(I didn't either) and she spent her time driving mini-vans and schlepping kids in Grand Marquis's and Crown Vics. So, we bought the car. In 6 years the car had 12K miles, I finally said ENOUGH! It was the stick, she drives it like a champ, but she hated the extra work of shifting. She hasn't driven the MN6 'Vette yet, with the ripper, it takes alot more effort to shove it through the gears. If we get her another "FUN" car it will be a C-5 rag AUTO. Then, at least she will drive it. But, she hasn't even indicated she's ready for something. She takes my GT Mustang, upon occaision because she is comfortable with it (she also likes the STEEDA SHIFTER). Don't make the mistake I did, get her something SHE LIKES TO DRIVE!
Had an 2001 Z06 (fairly stock), got a wild hair and bought a 2005 Evo MR. I went and had the Evo modded to 330awhp, looks, suspension, etc... had it for a total of 4 months, and bought another Z06 (this time an 03).
Its apples to oranges really, but the vette is just 'nicer.'
Hmm, I would first start off, by getting your wife to drive HER new car.
then I would either mod or sell for a C6.
it is simple, really...
The box shaped EVO shouldn't even cross your mind, it is a family styled car, with a little pep for the people who can only afford one car, and it has to be a 4 door for a family.
When I think perf and speed, I don't think of any 4 door cars.
1. Take the Evo and go to Evo Forum.com (let the wife keep the C5 and don't forget to bring her onto Corvette Forum)
2. Keep the C5 and modd like h*ll (you found other discomforts w/the C5 though, so that don't make sense)
3. Get a C6 to meet your needs and let the wife hang onto the C5 (this should meet everyone's needs, just don't forget to bring your wife onto the Corvette Forum and tell her to "save the wave!")
I highly recommend option 3, I suppose option 1 makes most sense financially (since you already driving these vehiles) but I don't know what your family situation is, etc.
Good Luck!

Buy a C5 with a 6 speed. All will be much better......
There is a WORLD of difference between driving my wifes a4 99 coupe and my 02 Z06.
The Z has lighter steering, quicker "reflexes" on the road, and of course it screams away from an a4 coupe in any kind of performance trial.
If I were modding your car, headers, open up the airbox, and computer tune. That will perk it up affordably. Suspension wise, IMO - Z06 shocks, springs , sways and a Z06 spec alignment. Get rid of the runflat tires too.
Test drive an 01-04 C5 w/Z51 or a C6 w/Z51, and then the others you may be interested in besides a concept car. Choose the one that makes you happy. I wouldn't invest more money into something your not happy with as you will probably trade it or sell it and will not get that return back.
Evoultions are great cars. But honestly the turbo just makes an illusion of it being faster. Boost does feel neat. But in all reality. Your cars makes more horsepower , torque , and weighs less. So it's a bit impossible for it to be faster. Also when it all boils down Evo's are just rally cars. They will never compare to the luxury of a corvette.
Anyways,
AWD < RWD anyday. I understand that all wheel drive vehicles are nice and you can launch well. I'd just take a rear wheel drive car anytime of the day. Much more fun , much more potentional , and less things to break haha.
Just mod your C5 man! You'll fall in love with it all over again! thats what always happens to me.
Turbo cars definitely have a different feel to them. I switch between my turbo 3000 gt and the C5 constantly, and I am not happy with either one when i first get in it. After driving it a few days, i am in love with each car all over again. I recommend you give it some more time.
Also, the Evo is just a rally car and when you get right down to it, it is only a 4 door sedan Lancer.
i would'nt be caught dead in that tuner riser piece of crap. how the hell can all of you even have these conversations about comparing a corvette to this evo thing, it's in a different universe compared to a vette, it's not even a sports car. and if you are comparing the two you dont belong in vetteville see ya.
As a prior Evo owner I can tell you that they are extremely fun cars. They are very mod friendly and they do handle well. They are pretty damn quick even when they are stock. Mine was an 04 and modded and tuned to 389 WHP. What got me was that even before I started modding I had killed the clutch in 11,000 miles, had warped rotors, and 3 different check engine lights. I didnt baby the car but I didnt track it or abuse it. The only thing they would cover were the check engine lights. Anything over stock HP will start weakening the drivetrain the transfercase and rearend are extremely fragile, and clutch doesnt even hold the stock HP for long. I now have an 01 Z06, the car is 100% easier to launch, it handles way better than the Evo ever did at higher speeds. The evos handling and acceleration kinda decline as the speeds get higher. I've never driven an A4 Vette but it must be VERY different to a Z. The Evo may be more practical as a daily driver but the Corvette was designed to perform well. The Evo is a souped up econobox, PERIOD. I can't tell you what to do but I can tell you from owning both, that from a performance standpoint the C5 platform is in a whole nother world than the Evo. You can get 450-500WHP from your LS1 with forced induction and a professional tune and not worry about reliability, with less than ten grand invested. to get those numbers out of the Evo you'd have to spend AT LEAST that much and it WOULD NOT be reliable or be a very functional daily driver.
In my opinion, EVOs look like sh-t. You can get some good power out of them, but man, with me, it's not all about power. It's also about the look. I'd drive a slower Corvette any day of the week.
