Most people don't post about driving 10K miles without a problem.
So you see more problems than the C5 fleet really have. Thats just another reason this Forum is so great. If a person has a problem, most likely, it can be addressed right here.
If you call being in REDUCED ENGINE POWER mode while you're twelve hours from home and have to wait four days for a TAC module terminal a problem, then yep, I've had a problem this year!
My vote went to "A Few Problems" becuase there was not a choice for only one problem. Fact of the matter is I have only had one problem in almost four years: Passenger side window would not go down.
Just a short list. If you haven't these problems, you will.
1.Steering colum lock failure
2. Wheel bearing failure
3.Complete electrical system failure (grounds)
4. ECM failure
5. ABS module failure
6. Active handling module failure
7. Steering wheel position module failure
8.Cooling fan failure (three)
9. AC compressor exploded
10. HVAC control panel light failure
11. Rocking seat
12. Daytime running lights break every time it rains
13. Oil pressure sending unit failure
14. Coolant surge tank failure
15. Power windows stick
16. Tire pressure sensors fail
17. Power seat memory failure
18. Assorted parts fall off of the interior
19. Tail light fell out
20. exterior temperature sensor failure
21. drivers side outside rear view mirror won't stay in place
22. Ac drive belt makes noise
23. HVAC door actuators won't actuate
24. alternator failure
25, water pump failure
This doesn't cover it all. It is a 2002 that I bought new, never been wrecked and , unless the dealer did it in the first 10 miles, its never been under water.
My 01 got the leaky butt this last spring, the car had 15k on it. When I bought it a year ago, I bought the car from a private party, but talked to a buddy of mine at the Chevy store and bought a 48 month GMPP for it for a grand. One more little thing and that will pay for it self.
3 more years for worry free driving.

Y2K A4 Vert bought this past January. Leaks in differential and transmission seals, gear shift indicator broke, cigarette lighter came loose after I bought my radar detector? (no biggy...I don't smoke and I can use the auxillary plug in the center console), squeaking steering wheel (annoying only...I now ignore it.), ABS/Traction control warning light pops up ever so often, gas guage lies like a dog and says tank is empty (I keep tabs on how far I have driven since last fill up!), top leaks on both sides at the A pillar (solution: stay out of rain).
The leaks were the most expensive to fix and last weekend I noticed the differential leak has returned!? This will be the 3rd fix.

I broke the valve stem so I needed a new TPS sensor but thet was self induced. My AH has been tripping out but seems OK at present. Apart from a squeaky belt and a slow leak on a rear tire I've been trouble free.
It's interesting when threads like this come up. Ask Corvette owners how their car's been running and you'll see quite a range of responses. They'll run from, "No problems here on my '98! (of course, I only drive it a constant 54 mph to local car shows once or twice a year,)" to "I've replaced everything except for the body and the frame on this daily driver with 300,000 miles I use for haulin' merchandise through the mountains of Montana," and everything between.
It's my opinion that the C5 is generally a reliable car if properly maintained and driven.
"Problem prone" means different things to different people. To some, it's about the money. "I paid $3000 in 3 years for three major repairs." To others, it's the inconvenience. "Every time I have a small electrical repair, my wife and I have to drive two cars to the mechanic to drop it off, then she has to drive me to work and back the next day, then drop me off to pick up the car - it's such a hassle. Then a few months later something else stops working and there we are again."
Though the advice given on the forum is top notch, I'd also suggest you send your friend to professional websites that analyze and discuss the reliability expectations of the particular model in which he shows interest.
