You should also treat your tank with Techron octane booster if you have been using 87 octane gas in your car. Here is a link to a list of top-tier stations:

It is more expensive to buy top-tier gas, however, in the grand scheme of things, you will save yourself a ton of potential engine issues down the road
If he has to ask what octane gas to run in his 'Vette, he sure as hell isn't going to understand what piston crown cooling and carbon build-up are!

It's 'senior' comments like yours that drive the new members away from asking questions. Honestly, if your comments are only to be a smart a**, no need to make them!
Dont feel too bad its just that this question comes up regularly. A few years ago one of the GM engineers who designed the C5 was active on the Forum. It was one question which would guarantee to drive him crazy. His advice was that the LS1 is a high compression engine and needs 91 octane plus. It has a knock sensor that retards the ignition automatically to compensate for low octane gas. You just lose power and mpg. Some modified cars need even higher and you'll often see threads talking about pinging" even using 91. Anything less than 91 should be a one off IMHO although somem members use 87 regularly and dont notice a problem.

My view is that you should avoid making the car adjust the timing. By definition the knoock sensor is compensating for the pre ignition thats already occured. Its after the event. Any pre ignition is bad as the damage, however small, has already occurred.

We all spend a lot of $ on our cars. The extra .10c a gallon is probably a sound investment if you look at strip down costs.

BTW you can download an owners manual here:

http://www.trademotion.com/pages/ind...#ownersmanuals

or at Gene Culley's site

I run the highest octane I can find. Usually 93 at the local Shell. Why would you want to risk running cheaper gas in a Corvette?

If your thinking of spending $15.00 for Octane booster, just spend the extra $2.00 at that pump to use 93. I feel my car is worth only the best.

Do the math! Even $4.00 extra. The car is worth it.

not only that, but many people have been fooled into believing that technical people write the owners/service manuals.

While it is true (that they are a part of it) ... lawyers also have input.

Many times - the search for the truth lies outside the owners/service manuals.

My original post was TOTALLY wrong!!!

In fact...You shouldn't even need the owner's manual to know that your 'Vette needs HIGH octane fuel!!!

I'm starting to realize that not all 'Vette owners are gearheads (I'm certainly not).

Some are

Maybe the decal that says "Premium Fuel only" (at least thats what I think it says" would clue you in?

I think Techron is a cleaning additive, not an octane booster.

I go out of my way to fill up at Shell, 93 octane. It's the only top-tier gas available in my area.

Sunoco (USA) doesn't seem to be top tier, Sunoco Canada is.

I think we all scared him off

Maybe he got the hint. But I only go to chevron for the added bonus techron to help clean all the gunk out. Wish I could get my hands on something other than 91 octane...

I use 95 octane and 98 when I can get it

Its a cheat though. In UK we rate it RON not PON as in the US. 95=91 and 98=93

okay so maybe i'm wrong and i use premium anyway so don't knock me but i heard something from like dateline or whatever that the gov is in partnership with the gas companies and they are the ones saying premium fuels only cause they get kickbacks on it? someone got sued and so new cars don't say that anymore. My newest vehicle is 04 so I haven't verified that anywhere but it all comes out of the same truck and same tanks so we are probably all paying an extra $2-4 every fill up so mr Pres can drink his tea.
