I know....go to the Salt Flats and go as fast as you can backawrds and see for yourself. This way you will not have to worry about hitting something or someone.
Silverstate Classic in NV, Big Bend in TXs and there is one in Kansas or Nebraska IIRC. Maybe one more in Tx too. Are the only LEGAL OPEN road races that I know of ( could be more) but these events also have tech rules and driver skill requirement too.
If you have to ask "what would Happen?" you dont need to be there. You could die or worse, be a quad for the rest of your life.
I have several totaled corvette pics from speeds under 100 mph. Not good at all.
Most ppl chit bricks when I give them rides at over 125 mph, let alone over 150 mph. (Heck ATNB - Forum Mod - who has been drag racing for years, received a new perspective and respect for speeds above 125 for more then a few secs.
If you want to legally try high speeds do an High Performance Drivers Event. Here is the NASA Rocky Mt division http://www.nasarockymountain.com/

I'm not asking "what would happen?"... I specifically asked if anyone knew at what speed a C5 would lift off if it got turned around - I think that there is a probable window of speed that it would happen, but I guess I just wasn't very clear in my original post.
I thought it would be an interesting discussion and I'm kind of surprised that apparently there's not much information on the subject because no one has actually attempted to answer the specific question... There's been some confirmation that it would likely happen and some good points made that it would be bad, but not even a guess as to "what speed" it would happen. Like with anything that I do, I like to do research and I'm curious by nature, so while I KNOW that it would be bad, what I'm really looking for is... well, I've already said it and I'll leave it at that.
So, thanks to all... this has been an education (not in the way I expected) and I'll try to be very specific the next time I post.
BTW, thanks for the additional info... I do plan to go to Pueblo when the season opens and I'm actually much more interested in that type of racing anyway.

There is a lot of data on this subject, just not on the General section, Over under the Autocross and Road Race section.
Many of us have soo much aero info it is mind boggling. Fortunitly there are several aerodynamic engineers on Corvette Forum to help us put it in perspective
Your cars alignment and rake are most important. With out each at the proper setting even 80 mph the car feels 'floating' as if it will take off.
Remember a race car is an upside down airplane wing. Then again Being too perfectily designed is not a good thing either. ie the Mercedes that Flipped at Le Mans and Road Atlanta.

Based on having been able to recover ok a few times at 125-135ish........lift off..........170+ feels on the edge with a soft suspension and small hoosiers on all 4 corners, but ok by me

170+, huh? I'd like to feel that someday... Coming up will be my first full season of AX and hopefully driving school. I'll hold back on the high speeds for a while.
Just realized that both links you posted at 12:26 pm are of the same crash... I found the Mercedes one on the same page called: Flying Mercedes CLK GTR at LeMans
He wasn't near any other car - something definitely wrong there!
I have spun my C4 Open Road race car at 140ish and no lift noted. This was before I had a wing on it.
I have also Blown a tire at 204mph. My parachute kept me from spinning. In the pic all the damage you see is from the tire EXPLODING. I never hit anything.
It amazes me that even now people think there is only one group the Nevada open road races-Silver State Car Challange. But there is another group that puts the races on they are called MKM racing. Their online site:
This the better of the 2 groups in my opinion, I race with both. They make it easier to get quailified. It is run by racers for the love of the sport, where as SSCC is just doing the races for the money, so are not responsive to the racers like MKM is.
With all that said I am unable to answer at what speed a backward going C5 will go airbourn.
I know I do not want to find out about going airborne at all. I noticed that when I ran the Texas mile to a mere 180 mph that at about 160ish that it seemed that my Vette seemed to hug just fine and at 180 mph the same and I was wiping the smile off my face as I went through the mile marker. I know at those speeds I would be more than likely toast if I went airborne and to think I did this in street rubber and had no tracking issues My car is slammed on the ground with Koni FSD and Z Sways so I did not notice any lift at all
I wonder if too many ppl see these high speed crashes on X-Box or PS3 or GT2 computer video games and just think it is cool.
There is a difference in crashes between a computer video game and in real life ( I skimmed off a wall at Road Atlanta going backwards at 80-100 mph) So I do speak from experience.

That's good to hear... I suppose that it would be unusual to get backwards and "stay" that way and like another guy said, you would probably be dumping speed really fast.
I've seen the openroadracing.com site, but didn't make the connection that it was actually another group doing the same races. What kind of speeds to average "street Vette" owners hit at these races? Might like to go out and observe or work the course this summer to see what it's like.
