Have some fun with this. Tell the guy that you need this in order to move the car in such cold weather. The item is in Marquette Mi. & you have family there that is willing to pick up for you. You need this item quick. How can you get it quick? You are willing to pay more if you can get it quick. Let him answer (if he does) & then tell him to give you an address to pick it up in Marquette. If he does, tell him that all of a sudden, your mother in Romania has become ill with an epidemic in that country. You must go there & take care of her. You are willing to sell your corvette (topless) to him for only $500. .....need I say more....

Default same old scam

I had almost this same thing happen last year on eBay when was bidding on a tinted roof for my C5. Except this time the owner was in London "on business" for awhile. I was the second highest bidder after the sale but he offered it to me because of problems with the original buyer. Then I get "official" looking emails with eBay and SquareTrade templates about handling the sale. Strange thing was that eBay can't spell and has horrible grammar in their messages. It's always a scam when they are in a foreign country and want to deal only with money orders.
C5 removable roofs must be a big scam item for these guys for some reason.

Latest update: I got this e-mail from e-bay. I put the "X"'s in the e-mail address. This came from the same e-bay return address as the one I got before from e-bay stating the item had been sold. This one looks legit. I hope it is anyway! Has anyone gotten a second chance offer before?

Good news!

To purchase this item and for further details use the seller's contact
information: XXXXX@XXX.com

purchase: 97-04 OEM Corvette Top Torch Red, Item number:

Login in to Ebay. Go to my messages. If the 2nd chance offer came from the seller via Ebay then the message will be there. If not then I would suspect a scam.

I never read, answer, nor click on any links from EBAY/PAYPAL that I receive in my regular e-mail account.
I've received two from PAYPAL this week that were obvious phishing scams since I don't have a PAYPAL account.
I go to "My EBAY"...if the messages are legitimate, they will be shown in "My messages". If not, I send a complete copy of the message to their security department.
I doubt anything much occurs there with the volume of this crap occurring daily around the world.

WTF? I logged into my e-bay account and there were only two messages, welcoming to e-bay. Nothing about a second chance offer. Now I'm really pissed!

Thanks for the help on this. I'm new to e-bay but I'm never going to even look at e-bay again. Why don't they just call it scam-bay! What a frigging waste of my time.

The same thing is happening on CRAIGSLIST now (they're impossible to report to CRAIGSLIST)...think of how productive the scammers could be if they applied their talents in legitimate business...like being a mortgage broker or something.

No reason to slam Ebay. You follow the rules, check to verify the message came form Ebay etc. Use common sense as you would when buying anything and you'll be OK.

Smartest thing you did was ask advice from other experienced in this area.

How do I report this to ebay? Can I just forward the e-mails to them? Sorry, I am an e-bay nube.
Forward the email or auction number to:
spoof@ebay.com
spam@ebay.com

Someone will get in touch with you from e-bay.

You should see the NCRS C1's that the scammers try to sell for 9k. They usually say that their father owned the car and died recently so they just want to clean up the estate or some dupe like that. Oh yea they are usually overseas somewhere and want you to wire them $2500deposit to ship the car here.

I report every one I find.

Dont'be

Don't blame E-bay, they do a really good job of policing the auctions but there are hundreds of thousands of items on that site and it is impossible to catch every one of the scammers. It is not specific to E-bay but everywhere in the world. I get emails all the time stating that I just won the @#$%$%^^ Lottery is some country that doesn't even have a vowel in its name claming that if I wire a deposit to cover the transaction fees and applicable taxes they will send me a gazillion US dollars. These individuals are everywhere you look.
Just be careful - If it sounds too good -- you know the rest.

Default FEA BAY Question...Updated

Hi There,
I was curious if you contacted the seller upmich68? If he is a honest e-bay seller which most of them are. His reply should be informing you thats its sold for $280. & that he shipped it to the winning bidder.
Most sellers will provide in their reply the shipping order tracking number & you can track the item movements.
Hope this helps you.

Al, great advice from John T. Try looking for it locally or maybe within a decent driving distance. Good luck with your search!

Also, if he never mentions what is for sale and just refers to it as "the item", you know its a scam.

Yup, that's the same message I got and it wasn't through eBay messages, only to my email. I'm still not sure how they got my email, but it's the same scam.
