Had a radar detector mounted to my C5 black leather upper dash deck via velcro double-stick patch. On dash for a long time. Now want to clean off the residual sticky adhesive left from the velcro. What is the actual material of the dash? And would welcome any suggestions for safe removal of the adhesive.
The first thing I would try is masking tape. Try dabbing a bit of masking tape on the adhesive. It might stick to the tape. I do that all the time at work when removing adhesive from acrylic. It's not as messy as adhesive remover.
DO NOT put nail polish remover on that dash , that stuff is acetone!
I would test in an obscure place first with any petroleum product.
3M adhesive remover is made for that.
Another vote for GooGone. 100% safe and smells great. Soak it up and let it sit for 60 seconds. Then wipe with a paper towel. Repeat to make sure you get it all. Then treat it with your choice of protectant.
The Good News: GooGone, #M Adhesive Remover, and even Alcohol did a good job of removing the adhesive, although it took some time to do it.
The Bad News: the adhesive actually modified the dash material enough so there were clear marks left. I'm at a very cool trim and interior shop checking out ways to solve this. One is a slighly textured dye job. If not, its time to replace the upper dash.
