Depending on where you live if you drive the actual speed limit you become a hazard to the flow of traffic which is going much faster and forcing others to weave around you. To be fair, some states are more sensible with their speed limits and set them at actual driving speeds.

Jim
And those states you speak of ....... I'll bet don't have to enforce traffic laws or issue speed citations - cause everybody drives at actual driving speeds (whatever speed that is?) It's the speeding vehicles weaving in and out of traffic that is the hazard ...... plus nobody is forcing you to do so ...... it's your choice to exceed ...... somebody else has already set the limit.
I got a ticket last week and can't afford to get another one. Who makes the best detector today and what kind of money should I expect to pay for one?
My valentine 1 is so good, I took my wife for a ride and she saw the detector go off with a cop over a mile away and she took it from me and put it in her truck. She says it is fun just knowing where they are hiding
I don't consider myself a outlaw, but last Sunday I was driving down the road and a State trooper came from around the curve and was following me for 2 miles, when we had to stop at a red light he just sat there behind me. When the light went green I turned left and he turned the blues on and pulled me over. I said I did not think I was speeding and that I knew he was behind me, he then said I was 10 over both times he hit me with his radar. I was pretty sure I was 5 over and I did not let up. Anyway, he gave me a ticket for speeding anyway.
SO be it, he was a little overboard in my opinion, but I guess he felt like he did his job.
Before last Sunday, I had not wanted a Radar detector, as most of the time I enjoy a nice easy cruise.
Hi Jim,
You are correct sir.I was wondering which one you have? What do you recommend & where are they mounted? Battery operated or plug into cig. lighter?
Are you enjoying your retirement? I hope so.
Thanks for any info.

I have a Passport 8500 X50 w/Blue Display.
I have used Escort products since the original model. But there are many good detectors out there. Do some research on Google.
I have mine direct wired to the power in my rear view mirror
So new to retirement that I don't feel retired yet.......but as they say, "sure beats working"
If you only want to be alerted to the most dangerous signals arriving from directly in front of you and not be bothered by the considerably less dangerous signals arriving from the rear and sides, the 9500i will fit that bill very nicely.
Umfortunately, I have tried several radar detectors. Some work very well, some not so well. There are 2 indisputables however...NONE of them work EVERYtime....and the only SURE way to avoid a ticket is to drive the speed limit....a VERY hard thing to do in a VETTE
the escort detectors are by far the best on the market...ive had the 8500 for about 4 years and not once did it dissapoint me..even if it were to alert you too late that radar waves are bouncing off your car, more often than not it will alert you way before the LEO will have visual sight of your car, so if you're by yourself on the road and there's barely anyone around you, you shouldn't be speeding anyway, just play it safe..
the new 9500i has gps an poi memory so you can save "speed traps" and worry less
ps - driving in excess of the posted speed limit is illegal and unsafe so dont do it...unless the speed limit is not posted
Escort is owned by BEL and so is Passport but in order for you to get the best detector you must first know what the cops in your area are using. Most detectors are better at one band than another, in my case they use K band and Lidar (lazer) so i use a BEL 995 and a BEL 905 lazer jammer (passort makes another version as mine has been discontinued its 4 years old) i can tell you for a fact that it works and works well. However a lazer jammer is illegal in some states as are radar detectors. My friend has a BEL STI which is the same a 995 but undetectable to the Police. BUT a cop can still give you a ticket without recording your speed based upon his expert opinion, and you will have to fight it.
cheers
i have the cheapest one walmart sells a cobra unit for 40 bucks or so and it works just as well as the escort 9500 i spemy 400 on make sure its up as high on the windshield as possible.... remember radar picks up the fastest moving object when it just roaming...... stay out of left lane use the bigger cars for cover and if ur first ur busted and yes i have 21 years behind the badge and the radar.... if all else fails hire the best traffic atty and it will never make it to court or your driving record...moving radar is +/- 2mph stationary is+/- 1mph thats from the manufacturer...... its also only as good as the last time it was calibrated and i dont mean the littlr tuning forks i mean a factory calibration,,,, the speedo on a real police package car has a cert calibrated speedo.... ive seen my radar tuned with my little forks then drive around and it shows my vehicle speed and compared to the speedo be off as much as 3 to 4mph!!!!
The tuning fork is a valid calibration accepted by the court as a valid calibration. You strike the tuning fork and hold it in front of the radar gun. The LED reads 60 mph on the radar’s readout. If it doesn't read 60 mph then either the fork needs to be replaced or the radar needs to be recalibrated. It's a system of checks and balances. The fork checks the radar and the radar checks the tuning fork. 22 yeas behind the badge for me, with 11 of those years on the motorcycle as a traffic officer. I don’t use a radar detector myself. In my opinion, of the detector goes off, then it’s most likely too late to do anything.
