I know CF doesn't encourage speed posts..
but here's a 2 minute video on our way to the Salt Flats.. There's an "official" Bonneville Salt Flats -Speed Week website.. To run in the "official" speed week events, costs $300. Held annually around the 20th of August, weather permitting. You can also just go out there anyday and drive out onto the salt flats.. I-80 exit #1 at the NV & UT border. ..BUT not after a rain.. === mud.!
It happens the 28th of Sept in Las Vegas. The link below is info and entry forms. I run Open Road races with this group and they are first class. If I was not working I would be at this event.
I've only taken two cars over 150mph, first was my 1994 Mazda RX-7 at 160mph on I-10 Mobile Alabama, and my 2000 C5 at 155mph on I-20 BFE Georgia.
Each time I did, I noticed considerable front end pitting from presumably road debris/sand/grit in the wind... not to mention, the RX-7 had significant "micro-stars" I could see in the front windshield at night.
My question is, You run 175 or better in your C6/Z06, dont you necessarily tear up your front end's finish and windshield on the salt flats? What about the rear side of the wheel wells?

If you were not following anyone doing that speed, that shouldn't have happened...

You would be supprised at how much dust and bugs can do to your car, nose and windshield at those speeds. Even when NOT following someone.
Yes the nose of the car gets beat to chit. and that is what windshield tear offs are for.
I have ran my car on a closed, very flat, section of pavement at 1100 feet about sea level. Rev limiter bumped to 6900rpms in 5th gear. Only mod beside tune is a TRAP intake.
The car ran 180.1X mph with the rev limiter bumped on my Garmin hand held GPS unit.
He's not bragging about racing some kid in a fart canned rabbit, he's asking a question.
Don't get your panties in a bunch. Doing 150mph on a public road with the driver filming the action isn't exactly the smartest thing to post on the Forum.
And as the Forum rules CLEARLY states...
"Street racing is dangerous and illegal.
Kill stories, or any posting about illegal, reckless and dangerous activities on any roadway, is not permitted at Corvetteforum.com.
I just did the pony express 130. I was allowed up to 168. I took it to about 165. I would say the car had some left in her. I am thinking I could have come out around 175ish. I did have her in the 150+ range for a while. Oil Temp went to 303 The car did feel light, but it was no problem since the road had nice long straits. Also the transmission high temp warning came on. But that was 50 miles into the race!
If you want to do high speed runs look into open road racing events. All that I can say is its a whole new level. I did the 130 class and that was an eye opener. It was my 2nd race, the first on I did I ran in the 120 class. The more safty equipment you get the faster you can go.
Key word here is legal; if it's at a sactioned event this should be within the rules...posts that don't meet the wise constraints of the OP should disappear.
I expect to do one of the LEGAL and SANCTIONED "flying mile" events next year; either an existing event or help glue one together in the PacNW.
a little different gearing in the tranny than the z and power is about the same as a bolt-on z, but same wheel/tires and body...187mph before I ran out of "runway"...had to see what it'd do before I put in the 4.10 gears
I was going to Speedweek in Sept. but I am closing on a house around that time. Bonneville has a 130 mph club for street cars. You have one mile to hit 130. I believe the only thing required is a fire extinguisher. It is supposed to be very difficult to hit 130 on the salt but I believe a C5 will do it. I have always wanted to do it and I will in 2009. I would like to here from some who have done the 130 mph club.
I have a buddy who did the 130 club last year in a late model camaro that he also autox's regularly. He said it was a blast and he wants to do the 150 club now but that entails a good bit more safety equipment. He already installed a roll bar and I'm not sure what else is needed. I will do this in the near future along with the ORR that starts in Wendover. I think that was in June of this year and if I wasn't going out of town that week for business I would have ran that ORR for sure...in the novice class (120mph I think). I have a pass to Miller Motorsports for an open track event that my wife bought me this year and I just finished with my brake job so I am good to go for the track. I hope I can get in before the weather turns...
