You should replace your MN6 transmission fluid every 50,000 miles.
1997-2000 C5s use paper blocker rings. Not all synthetic fluids are compatable. Mobil 1 is NOT, my 1998 C5 started grinding when going into 6th gear after 50,000 miles with Mobil 1 ATF in it. I changed to Amsoil ATD and it stopped immediately.

The reverse lockout might have stuck or been energized that one time for some reason.
Typically though, reverse is gated off unless the car energizes the solenoid and opens the gate. You can check it with the car off. It should not want to go to reverse but you can force it with some pressure. That's on purpose so you can still back up if the solenoid fails.
