I gotta say in the newer vettes, (compared to my old shark) especially with the windows up,it is more difficult for the drivers to see and be seen by the drivers. This COULD be part of the explanation. When driving my non-A/C 69 with windows down and more vertical windshield angle I am much more visible!! The more steeply raked tinted glass makes the driver more difficult to see IMO,,I wave any how,,and often keep windows down in my FRC when in town,,seems like you feel and hear more that way!!
I bet this has gone on for every new generation of Corvette.
and I can tell you without guessing that it has not.
I remember the introduction of the C3 in 1968 (by older brother bought one brand new). And then of course I remember the C3 redisgns and then the introduction of the C4 and C5. At no time in the past did I ever witness new generation Corvette owners snub-off other Corvette owners, or just flat-out didn't know to wave at all Corvettes criossing their paths.
Here's my thoughts; the C6 is nore "ricey" than any other generation of Corvette. It's still far from rice... but the most giant step taken in that direction due to the front end styling and angular lines. And due to this there's an entirely new breed of 1st time owners in C6's that never knew the Corvette heritage & past... and/or flat out don't care about it; and not wanting to learn abotu it because their introduction into the Corvette relm is just a fancy passing/fad. They'll shortly move on to a GTR or the new NSX.
Has that happened in the past??? probably... but not to the mass extent I'm seeing it with the C6.
I have not had a wave returned in a couple of months, and have started to think the tradition is dying. I am hoping that it is just an increase in the number of new vette owners.
Jeeps, and many other 4x4s for that matter, also do the wave. It was originally between any real off-road rigs. You can tell which ones they are by their mod choices, not to mention the dents and scratches. Now it is a Jeep thing that even the street-only drivers get in on. They are another group of people that are true enthusiasts. They mod and play with their vehicles just like us.
I was going thru an intersection & saw this hot babe. I was looking at her & didn't even notice the car. She waved as I was going thru the intersection & it wasn't till I looked in the rear view mirror, I noticed she was in a vette. (I guess I gotta get my prioritities straight.)

The C6 opened up the Corvette to a group of owners who had not previously considered owning a vatte. I have both C5 and C6 and I wave at all the vettes. Still working on a Monterey Red C6 I see often in my morning commute. Haven't gotten him to wave yet

My wife and I just returned from a trip to the smokey mountains where we literally saw DOZENS and DOZENS of Vettes from every generation but the C1. Having own Vettes for almost 30 years, I got to experience the time when the "wave" was "mandatory" for Vette owners! Even if I am walking, I still wave at any Vette I see. This past week, 99% of the C2-C5's waved either 1st, or after I did Of the 8-10 C6 guys, ONE GUY waved.
Now I may be wrong in assuming, but I would think that a lot of the C6 guys are former C5 owners, so they would know the "rules of the game" concerning waving, but I continue to be confused by it all.
I'm beginning to lose patience!!
Next time, try extending ALL your fingers on your hand when you wave. See how that goes.
Colonel D does have a good point, but in keeping with the spirit of this thread I'll say that as a new C6 owner I wave at every Corvette no matter the year. Sometimes the wave is returned, sometimes not. In fact, 50-50 seems about the right ratio in my experience.
But, this is not a new phenomenon for me. I drove a '99 C5 for 5 years (140k+ miles), and went thru the same new Corvette syndrome as the C6ers.
I don't think it's a big deal. I have owned 8 different Vettes during my lifetime, starting with a '75. The wave ratio has always been (for me) about 50-50 even though I rarely fail to wave. I believe the wave is worth preserving and am trying to do my part.
I wandered into this thread unintentionally. But, I hope you don't mind a comment or two from a guy who loves Corvettes. Finally, the C5 was the best damn car I ever owned. I just pray my C6 lives up to its legacy.
Thanks,
Sam

I remember one morning while sitting at a red light a yellow C5 pulled up next to me. I threw the wave, but to my surprise the driver and his passenger both had incredibly confused looks on there faces as they reluctantly waved back . I then remembered I was in my wifes Camry!

I can only say 'maybe' to this. I agree about first time Corvette owners in C6's -- I think there are a lot of them. But a large group of C6 owners value the Corvette marque and all the tradition that goes with it too.
Just my thoughts,
Sam
I'm always surprised that any wave post brings out the negative comments and flog a dead horse symbol
The Wave is a tradition. Traditions are worth upholding. Once they die they're hard to bring back.
One things for sure, the true Corvette enthusiast will always value the wave as a symbol of a shared passion. But maybe the "transitory owners" who buy the latest generation will always need educating.
Now world hunger may take longer to fix..........................
I think it's a lot of it is new owners not knowing the traditions. I remember getting waves right after getting my Vette and not understanding why all of the other Vette owners were waving at me. I actually kind of thought they were confusing me for someone else! I did return the waves though. Once I learned of the wave I and my wife both wave at every Vette we see. Seems like here in town 99% of the ones that don't return the wave are C6 owners but I always try to give them the benefit of the doubt that they either don't know the tradition yet or just didn't see me. The other 1% are two C5, one C4, and one C3 that I pass on a near daily basis that will not wave. I still wave to the anyways, lol!
I think the wave is a great tradition and as long as we take it upon ourselves to share it and educate other Vette owners (nicely, lol) who do not know of it then it will live on! I know as long as my wife and I are still kicking then there will be at least two Corvette owners still waving at other Vettes!
We've had vetts for 6 yr. always waved and about 90% of the time got one back. Last week I bought a Jeep Wrangler, never had one before. All the sudden I notice that all Jeeps wave at me. So does that mean everyone waves at their respective makes? All Buicks wave at Buicks!!
Jeep owners might be the tightest of the lot. They actually have stickets that say "It's a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand"
