Default Rotor advice

I can only assume that the slight pulsating I occasionally feel when braking is caused by one or more of my rotors being warped. I believe they are stock (I inherited this car from my dad when he passed in June, so he's not around to ask). I know the calipers are stock. Not sure when he had the pads replaced. Gotta pull a car fax I think.

Anyway, I want to start thinking about some nice rotors. I do mostly street driving, no racing, but I do like to punch it once in a while when the roads are clear (just coming off the mark fast, nothing above 65--I live in an urban area).

I would like a set that won't rust, has a very good "bling" factor, and won't crack. I love the look of drilled and slotted, but I understand many of them crack around the holes. Is this true?

What is the VERY BEST set I can buy, based upon looks, no rust, no cracking? I don't mind spending up to 500 bucks on them. Is Brembo the best? What do you think?

Highly unlikely that your rotors are warped.

Could be because there is pad material on rotors.

Also, uneven wear of brake pads might cause the problem.

Powerslot makes some nice rotors that are supposed to be pretty resistant to rust and hold up nice.

I agree with independent one but I know you want new cool looking rotors. I bought some on line that are drilled and slotted and zinc coated (so they will not rust) for $250 about 4 years ago with no problems. If I remember right the name was sportbrake. Also paint those calipers while you have them apart.

Myth or not, My car was doing the same thing, It has 31,000 miles on it, I took off the rotors and had them turned and all is well now, I even used the same pads because they still looked great. So it is possible to have warped rotors...

Don't want to get into the urban myth argument and I've never had the problem on the Vette

On the Camaro I had the pulsating brakes and had the rotors shaved under warranty when I was in Italy. It never really fixed the problem and I ended up having new rotors fitted before it cleared up.

I'd suggest new rotors given how cheap they are. Even a new set of drilled and slotted only came in at $200 from sportbrakes.com. JMHO

I had the pulsating brakes as well. I couple of hard stops from 80-20 mph would remedy it for a few hundred miles. If the brakes were warped, it wouldn't go away at all. The condition would always slowly return. It was obvious to me that it was pad material buildup and/or uneven wear.

I purchased some slotted Powerslot rotors that were cadmium coated from Jason at Gulfcoastperformance (with EG now) No rust and the condition never returned.

Rock Auto has good cheap rotors for $35 a corner and they will last 2-3good track days so they would be just fine for DDing also.

Thanks, fellas. Still looking for the ultimate rotor. Money's no object here. I have little money in the stock market, LOL. But seriously, I don't want cheap ones. I want top of the line ones that will last and not rust. Anyone have any names for me, brands, etc....???

I ran a set of Baer Eradispeeds (one piece) on mine and they held up very well. No rust, no warping, no cracks, etc.

Give it a couple of foot to the floor stops from 90-30 and see if that clears up the issue. It helped mine!

Seems the deal on Sport Brakes is good, and the stop Bill mentioned from 90-30 will either clear it up or you know you need some brake pads/rotors

I'll give it a try. JD those Baer rotors look terrific and I guess you get what you pay for!

Any other brand names you guys would suggest?

I saw Power Slots, Brembo, and a Brake Designs...

I just bought the drilled/slotted and cryo rotors from brake designs and they look great. The performance is good too but I hear some high pitched sqweelling braking at low speeds. I think it may be the material form the Hawk HPS pads but I am not sure. The price certainly was right.

Exactly. Rotors will crack but they don't warp.

It is just a ploy to get you to have shops turn and machine the rotors which ruins them.

Check your pads. It may just need a new set of pads. You can change them without even opening the brake lines up. Just siphon out about 3/4 fluid from the reservoir and remove the caliper. Don't open the bleed line, use a c-clamp to compress the cylinder and remove the old pads and insert new pads. Support the caliper while your removing the pads, I've used an old gallon paint can which is usually the right height. Repeat for the other three. Refill the reservoir with DOT 3 fluid. Start up the car the first pedal push with feel a little mushy but after three or four pumps it will be fine.

Then before you use the brakes, go out and bed the pads. Take the vehicle to 30 mph bring it to and firm stop, repeat 19 more times. Then bring the vehicle home and let the brakes cool down. They'll be ready for use now.

I recommend AC Delco Durastop ceramic pads. If you insist on replacing the rotors generally for your stated use, the OEM rotors are just fine.

Did you put the lube on the back of the pads AND bed in the pads by braking 8-10 times from 30 mph and 2-5 hard stops from 40 mph?

Bedding is 20 consecutive "firm" stops from 30 mph, according to the Factory Service Manual.

Not sure about lube near a brake assembly, sure that isn't a reference to anti-rattle adhesive?
