Of course, I also believe a listing of every employee on duty that day and a narrowing down on the time it likely occurred and where they should have been (on/off lunch) in a desk drawer wouldnt hurt either

Just a simple list. Put a 1, 2 or 3 by each name: 1 = no interaction other than normal supervisory, 2 = Some supervisory interaction but not percieved as being negatively recieved, and 3 = supervisorly interaction that may have been negatively recieved. The type of person that would do this type of thing is likely not the sharpest pencil in the cup. You would be surprised how often they are completely surprised when they are caught in the act by what later appears to have been a complete coincidence but in reality was due to the manager vectoring thier attention towards an employee who through thier own actions called attention to themselves and warranted additional observation. In short, throwing the stuff on the car was a stupid thing to do, with no assistance from you they will continue to do stupid things.
Not to get nutz about it, but having the info may help somewhat in narrowing it down if it happens again.
Nothing you can do about it. This is the type of thing we agree to deal with when we agree to become a boss.
And while "could it be a girlfriend" is a very good lead to investigate, that would likely have occurred at home, where the message would have been more personaly received. The act is supposed to "send a message", does them no good if you get the wrong message (as in why do it if he will just think its a disgruntled employee).

To the OP: they have small cameras now that you can mount IN your car and they are motion sensor sensitive. If you bought a couple and mounted them you might get lucky and have police evidence to catch the bums that having nothing better in life then to do this. I feel for you...I would be so upset.

Im amazed you kept your patience. Once a kid drove past me when I was parked on the side of the road, and threw a mcdonalds apple pie at my car. Needless to say I followed him to where I could block him in, dragged him out of the car and taught him a lesson in respect.
