Default Got a ticket

Received a ticket from a Washington State cop yesterday on I-5 for doing 78 MPH in a 60 MPH zone. The ticket states I have to pay $175 or register to fight the claim within 15 days. I have no problem with the ticket other than when I did some research on-line at the Washington State Court monetary schedule http://www.courts.wa.gov/court_rules/pdf/CLJIRLJ6.2.pdf the fee for 16-20 MPH over the limit is $67. I am going to call them and find out what the deal is as I am Canadian and are not familiar with th US system. any insight would be helpful

There is a base fine with all citations then on top of that there is all kinds of special assessment fees things like that, that bring the price up. Wisconsin has the same thing base fine on 1-10 over speeding ticket is $30 but by the time you add all the extra fees the total dollar amount ends up at $160.80.

Court costs can add a lot to the price of a ticket.

18 over, you're lucky to only be paying $175. I just got a "rolling stop" ticket, $250.

Local governments are making up for their deficits by increasing traffic fines.

Think of it as being a good neighbor and making a donation. I think it may even be tax deductable, but better check.

I live in Washington and 18 miles over the speed limit aint no 67 buck ticket. Its a biggie. Probably 200 or more.

If you do the crime, you have to do the time.

I got nailed up there last April for 83 in a 70. I know darn well, I wasn't going that fast. The dude refused to tell me what he used to get me with and demanded to know what my business was up there. Hired an attorney and took it to court, only then to find out the dude used a laser. Of course at the time, my attorney listened to him state that he was aiming at the car's front plate from 2,000 feet away, which is physically impossible for a human to see...better yet, I don't have a front plate on the car. So, they changed it to a deferrment program where I had to pay the ticket and no tickets for a year, it won't go on my record....I sent a nasty-gram to the court with my check but of course I didn't hear anything back on it.

Not allowed to laser you from more than a 1000 feet due to a known problem with the guns at longer distances.

Landmark Ruling

New Jersey Superior Court Judge Reginald Stanton issued a landmark ruling in 1996.

The ruling states that laser guns may not target vehicles past 1,000 feet due to the gun's one millididadian beam divergence of 36" at that distance. Anything further than 1,000 the radar gun might incorrectly target an adjacent vehicle

Well they certainly don't go to any retirement funds! Depends on the jurisdiction. They go to support the court system, school system, jails, or into the general fund of the state budget. At no time does any of the citation money directly benefit law enforcement officers such as the retirement fund!

Actually, I'm a qualified Doppler Radar Specialst and provided all the beam-width calcs and so on to my attorney.. I was ready with everything till I found out later than it was a laser. The beam width on those is about 0.05 degrees from the gun which means at 2000 feet, the beam has only expanded to say, 11-16 feet. But Thanks for the tidbit.. sure didn't hear about that ruling.

A speeding ticket, or any moving violation citation, does benefit the police indirectly by providing them additional job security.

The bureaucrats aren't going to lay off a bunch of officers if the police are one of the major sources of revenue for the municipality.

The other day I clearly deserved a ticket as I zoomed by a Trooper as he sat in the median. He simply waved and let me go by. I was soooo happy he didn't yank me.
