I have been running it in my truck for about 2 years and just put it in my vette and wifes car this last change.

its good for me becuause I just change it once a year (truck sees maybe 15K/yr and wifes car sees 10k/yr)

the diesel guys love it in the duramax, they say 20-25K miles with no problems....

But when looking at Mobil-1, it's confusing as Mobil-1 is the factory fill for auto's like Corvette ZR-1 and below, Mercedes-Benz AMG (their high HP/performance division) All Cadillacs, All Porsches, All Bentliey's, All Acura RDX's, All Bristol fighter & fighter S, the Nissan GT-R, all Toyota Lexus LFA and the list goes on. And I'm sure Bobtheoilguy is fighting mad now, but if Mobil-1 is so poor a choice for a motor oil, why would those **** Porsche engineers even consider using Mobil-1 in all their engines? All things said, I think Amsoil is great stuff and sooner or later I'll find an outlet and start buying it, but right now Mobil-1 does everything my Corvette needs, So if it ain't broke, I don't want to fix it !
Mobil1 isn't bad oil. It's just not the best. GM doesn't use Amsoil because it's VERY expensive compared to Mobil1. Back when they first started using as their standard, Mobil1 was about $7/qt. Now it's about $4/qt. Amsoil has always been between $7 and $10/qt. Even as an Amsoil member, you're still paying more per quart than any other oil.

They both work fine. Just because there's a better oil out there doesn't mean that the high end cars are going to use it. That'd be like saying "Coil overs aren't better than leaf springs because GM didn't put them in the Corvette." There's always better than what the manufacturers put in. That's the magic of aftermarket.

Studies have shown that as Mobil1 breaks down, it almost exponentially loses viscosity because of the crude oil base stock. If you don't drive your car hard, than Mobil1 is always going to be a clear winner since you're not risking your motor. But if you're like me, you'll want something that isn't going to break down in viscosity while beating on the engine. Some of us (myself included) are **** about their cars:

Always must be clean - inside and outside.
Nobody can have a drink in the car unless it's water.
Everyone must kick the dirt off their shoes before getting in.
Check the fluids twice a week.
Clean the air filter every 2-3 weeks.
We have a very specific fuel we put in and never deviate.
Etc.

Why would we cheap out on oil when we're talking about a $20 difference? We spend so much time and money on our cars to begin with.

You see Mobil-1 on everything b/c they pay these company's to put there Logo on all of our oil fill caps and to use it in the first fill up and the big player is thats its Nascar's official oil great marking tool there. Not saying Mobil-1 is bad it just there is better out there. Its all about making money, this is America.

I repect your POV, but I find it REALLY hard to imagine that Porsche, Porsche, would consider using Mobil-1 over a European company like Castrol. And FWIW, GM doesn't say you HAVE to use Mobil-1, just that what you use meets GM4718M specs. Hell, you can use maple syrup so long as it meets GM4718M !

Porsche's aren't so fantastic that they need super oil... I used to work for a Porsche shop. They're pretty much just VWs that have been stepped on a little.

Take my word on it, those motors are nothing special that they'd need any superior oil.

Does that conspiracy theory also extend to consider Mercedes-Benz AMG as just a so-so German VW stamping shop/company as well ?

I know nothing about Mercedes, so I wouldn't speculate on that. I do know that Mercedes engines look nothing like a VW or Porsche engine, though.

BTW, I don't know if you realized it, but VW and Porsche are the same company. That's why they share a lot of the same parts.

Lets stay on topic

But it all comes down to Mobil-1 is a group 3 synthetic oil and Amsoil is a group 4 so obviously one is better than the other.

OK, well what is the difference between a group 3 basestock over a group 4 basestock? And why is is a group 3 any cheaper than using a group 4 ?

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...3173207AA710Ro

But the easy answer is that Group 3 is a synthetic blend of crude oil bases with synthetic additives. Group 4 is a fully synthetic (non-blend) oil.

The reason Mobil1 and some other oils are allowed to call their oils "Full Synthetic" is because of a law suit Mobil put against Castrol when Castrol was calling their crude-oil base-stock motor oil full synthetic while Mobil1 was actually a full synthetic at the time.

The court was in favor of Castrol (Gee I wonder which one paid more money to the judge - LOL) and so Mobil1 changed their basestock to crude oil too to save money since it was now perfectly legal to call their oil full synthetic even though it wasn't.

Mobil1's formula was actually the original formula Royal Purple was, and it was purchased from the guy that founded Royal Purple before Royal Purple was around. When Mobil1 changed their formula, RP came out with the original formula (slightly modified) as a full synthetic. Later down the like, RP changed it's base stock as well to a crude oil base.

There are VERY few group 4 synthetics out there. Amsoil is the best.

Edit: (Besides my spelling)
I noticed that the Yahoo answer shows that Mobil1 and RP are group 4 oils. This does not hold true to today.

Well I suppose cost is a factor, it costs $61.50 before shipping for Amsoil over $29.75 for Mobil-1 , but I guess you get what you pay for. Some people here swear by Castrol 'Edge', and some are in love with Pennsoil platinum. So I don't know, Where is there a comparison between Amsoil and Castrol Edge ? Or is Castrol the same as Mobil-1 ?

Here is my take on the Amsoil vs Mobil1 debate.
Amsoil is twice the cost of Mobil1, That is a whole lot of cash, There are members on here that have 200,000 to 300,000 miles on there car using Mobil1, I would hope Amsoil for the cost would help on the track, But I don't think it is really needed for everyday driving, Most C5s have an LS1 or an LS6 and that motor sure isn't an exotic motor. As some might think, It is a small block GM motor used in a number of GM cars.
Would I use Amsoil in my car? Yes I would, But not for what they are asking for it, As far as the Crude syn vs whatever amsoil is, There is nothing wrong with Mobil1 or any of the other syn oils. This debate comes up about once a month like clock work and you always have the ones saying Amsoil is the best.

Mr.Bill, by your leave, You make some very solid points. But you failed to mention 'Batteries, Tires and Car waxes'. But I suppose that in the next few days, we'll get around to debating them as well. You are a gentlemen, sir !

I have to agree with Mr. Bill

As I've said before, most on here use their cars as daily drivers with occasional "spirited" driving. Mobil1 is perfectly fine for this application, and so are other name brand synthetics. If your a weekend warrior who routinely tracks his car, then Amsoil may make more sense, BUT, I'm sure a lot who are more into racing also change their oil a lot more often making this a non issue. I use Mobil 1 in my vette and Amsoil in my track bike, but I'm not religious about it...depends if Amsoil is on sale, if not I go with another full synthetic.

In the end it's all personnel taste, so there really is no "wrong" answer.

Cheers.

there are some guys saying Amsoil is twice the price I beg to differ at walmart Mobil1 is 5.98 per qtx7=41.86 +the three quarts you have to add between changes for a 2001= 59.80 for 5000 miles.
Amsoil at my local store is 7.99x7=55.93 and since I run Amsoil no extra quarts no oil burn!!!!! and I change at 20,000 miles .
So the cost of runing Mobil 1 for 20,000 miles is 239.20
And the cost of running Amsoil for 20,000 miles is 55.93
So I save 183.27 in 20,000 miles Using Expensive Amsoil!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats weird I thought its so crazy expensive, I just went to my local auto parts dealer and he said he can get me amsoil for 8.25....hell its better than RP and Mobil-1 and its cheaper than RP. O and Mobil-1 one is 6.20 at my store, RP 9.80.

Seems it just better all around to go with Amsoil!

I wish we had local stores that stocked Amsoil.

EDIT: Never mind. There are a few I just found. "The power of GOOGLE!"
