I can tell you another true story. I bought my first Vette (torch red C5) in Dec. 97. When I went to the first Birthday Bash in March 98 I asked Dave Hill and John Cafarro why they did not have any chrome wheels available as an option. Their reply, "not necessary." They did say that aftermarket reproductions would be out soon. When I returned home from the BB I learned that Eckler's was chroming factory wheels and you could order them. They would charge you a core charge of $600 or $800 until you shipped your originals back to them. That is how I got chrome wagon wheels on my '98. I sold it in July '02 with the chrome wagon wheels on it. The guy who bought it probably thought they were factory also. He never asked and I never said. That is my story and I am sticking to it!!!
I also have a set of chrome wagons that came off my 1999. Mine are a bit beat up but still in running order (no cracks, has some curb rash, are chrome though and have center caps). If you are interested let me know. I'm down in the San Fernando Valley. I can get pictures on the weekend as I am always at work during the daytime through the week. Or if you happen to be down in the LA area let me know. Mine still have some Michelins on them but they need replacing.
I always hear about the chrome not being a factory option. But then someone made replicas of the center cap parts because those are plastic and chrome looking finish.
Yes, my friend had those and the first time he washed the car, guess what? They fell off.
