As a Corvette Technician, I have seen and driven them all. Personally I think the C5 is my favorite generation. The difference in performance between the LS1 and LS2 is minimal, in fact my STOCK 03 M6 Coupe hit a 12.8 1/4 mile, and many LS2 owners struggle to get 12's.
The only C6 I would consider is a C6Z (any year), and anything else with an LS3. The LS3 is a beast, and it gets even better with a tune. Personally I can't stand the passive locks and push start ignition. Most of the time the door takes 2 pulls on the handle (sensor) to open and many times there is a long delay after you push start before it starts, not to mention the huge confusion about if the ignition is on or off or in run or in accessory, and if the gear is not in reverse the battery dies because it stays on.
If you are a technician then you should know the 2005 was the only year where you had to park it in reverse or the battery would die. They fixed that for 2006 on.
my take is simple. If I was ready or needed to purchase a new (or at least new to me) car and a Vette was what I was getting, I would get a C6 over a C5. I like my C5, but I would get something newer/with a warranty, etc... C6 is a nice ride and a nice upgrade to the my current C5. Personally, I like the looks of all models of the C6. I believe the same type of comments were probably made about the C2, C3, C4, C5 previously as well.
Get what car you like. I'm sure there are plenty of really nice C5's available as well as really nice C6 models. If you are ready for a new one.. go for it.
I just found the article on the C8 which is now due out in 2016 because of poor market conditions and it will have a twin turbo and will be lighter and the pic shown is awesome.
At this point of time l might pick up a C6 vert 08+ but for the time being my C5 does the trick for me.
Living in NJ l can barely break 75mph before the law dogs pop up! And there are very few places that l can say is safe to play.
By the way my cousins Z06 2007 makes my C5 feel like a YUgo when breaking from over 100 mph and the acceleration 0-100.
Every generation people say the next one will be a mid engine. Remember the Aerovette? That was fly.
But anyway, the trend seems to be going toward a SMALLER corvette.
The c5 is very comfortable to me.
The c6 is JUST small enough inside that I can never own one.
I had aspirations of going from my c5 to a c7, but if it's as small or smaller than the c6... I guess I'll be driving my C5 until the lug nuts fall off.
A little smaller I guess, but I didn't notice it in the interior at all
I have an '01 with somewhat low miles 34,500, in great shape, but I have had it for 4 years now and I am in the mood for a change. If I change, it will be for a C6 '08 or newer because of the LS3 engine. I happen to like the looks of the C6. Not saying it is better looking then the C5, just that I like how it looks.
As for the Transformer/C7 they better improve on it from the proto type (movie version) or they won't sell many IMO.
The LS3 is a great option and as l said l'm only talking about the styling period. If you look in the C7 section they have pic's and it's a little different and it will most likely be a mid engine 6 cyl. with the same numbers as the V8.
As long as there have been multiple generations of Corvettes, owners of generations other than the current have always nit-picked the newer car.
"The butt is too big, the butt is chopped off, the front looks funny, I don't like the headlights", etc.....I think you get my point.
I love both of my C5's - but I love the C6 for one big reason. It represents the continuation of the Corvette. These cars must evolve and constantly improve in order to survive. New competitors are cropping up in the most unlikely of places.....just look at the new 2011 Mustang 5.0. 0-60 times, 1/4 mile times, almost 1g on the skidpad - all for about $15K less than a base C6. Like Ford or hate Ford - is the Corvette still the "best bang for the buck?"
Corvette must improve to remain viable and desirable.
In the future I think you'll see smaller Corvettes with smaller displacement power plants, possibly utilizing forced induction to retain the horsepower and torque ratings of today's engines.
And I guarantee when the next generation is unveiled and released for sale - C6 owners will be starting threads just like this one....
I totally agree with this!!
I really like the C6 myself. I would love to get one soon, however, I would want to keep my C5 also!!

I've owned seven C6's (2 Z06's,4 coupes & 1 GS vert) and have never, ever, experienced any of what you descibe habitually.
And as someone has already stated,05 was the only year you had to park the manual in reverse.
Exactly. I think due to GM's financial trouble, the mid engine will come in the 8th gen, not the 7th.
I like all generations of the vette. Some gens, I like more. However, I agree with the poster who said that it (c6) represents the continuation of the vette and I love that.
I don't want to get too attached to any generation. I know that I want to own a vette for 3-4 yrs and then get a clean used version of the next generation and continue as such so that I can experience many generations of this great car. I know that it gets harder to maintain older vettes 10+yrs old as parts get discontinued and more customized solutions (or junkyard solutions)are needed to address issues--not a fan of that.
