6.5 is correct.
The correct amount is 6.5 quarts. However, at least some of the C5 years had dipsticks that were not accurate. Apparently adding 6.5 quarts after draining the oil in an inclined position did not show a full reading on the dipstick. One of GM's engineers commented that 6.5 quarts is correct and that adding oil until the dipstick shows "full" means that it is 1/2 quart overfilled - not likely to hurt anything but not necessary, nonetheless.
