So I changed the oil in my 2000 coupe today. I used 5w 30 mobile 1 full synthetic. I read multiple times 6 to 6.5qts was ok for our cars. I drive mine 70 miles a day and often very "spirited". I put 6.25qts in it and let it idle. I now have lot of lifter noise. I checked the oil several times and it is ABOVE the hash marks! Did I over fill it? Will this cause any damage?
Again I have searched on here a bit, but OIL is a very common word to search on. I saw everything from guys using 5.5qts all the way up to 7qts.
Many people, especially when out on the track, run one extra quart in the car. If you are only about one quart above the full mark it should cause no problem. I have a Z06 and it takes 6 1/2 quarts to fill it after an oil change, I have been told. Just getting ready to do the first one.
honestly I havent used mobil 1 since i got the car. i've used castrol full synthetic till now. I will run the car a little later on and see how that goes.
I always just put in an even 7 quarts, Never an issue. Not sure why you would now have lifter noise.
Mobil-1 5W/30 and 7 quartz is fine. But when you said you now have lifter noise? Are you sure it was all Motor oil, cause the only thing I could think of is a difference in the viscosity of the oil, which could if it was ATF oil might be the cause. But if you have at least 10 PSI per 1000 RPM is perfectly normal. Mobil-1 5W/30 is a perfect oil and I seriously doubt a different motor oil of 5W/30 viscosity is going to make much difference. How many miles do you have on the Car/Engine and when you say "driving spirited" does that in any way hint at semi-abuse to the drivetrain ? If it never did it before, using Mobil-1 means the oil isn't your problem. Perhaps you've got a problem in the valve train, like a bent pushrod ?
Call me CRAZY.... I live in Florida and on both of my Corvettes I use the normal Oil. One of them I have over 190,000 mile and the other only 65,000.. I have done a lot of research on this and yes full synthetic is better, although if my know it all attitude is ever wrong than it is a perfect time for major change with the motor....
I would not worry too much if the noise gets too loud than take it in and hopefully there is not extensive damage...
Racing or Other Competitive Driving See your Warranty Book before using your vehicle for racing or other competitive driving.
NOTICE: If you use your vehicle for racing or other competitive driving, your engine may use more oil than it would with normal use. Low oil levels can damage the engine. Be sure to check the oil level often during racing or other competitive driving and keep the level at or near 1 quart (1 L) above the upper mark that shows the proper operating range on the engine oil dipstick. For information on how to add oil, see “Adding Oil” under “Engine” in the Index. After the competitive driving, remove excess oil so that the level on the dipstick is not above the upper mark that shows the proper operating range.
